With an aging roster and injury issues plaguing the team, the Penguins are expected to pursue major trades ahead of the deadline. One name has been recently popping up in speculation, and an insider believes a deal makes perfect sense for Pittsburgh’s championship aspirations.
Dan Rosen Links Kiefer Sherwood To the Penguins As a Potential Trade Target
The Athletic’s Dan Rosen addressed potential trade destinations for Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood during a recent mailbag. The insider identified Pittsburgh as a logical landing spot given their current situation.
“Sherwood also makes sense for the Philadelphia Flyers and Penguins, who are both trying to compete with the Rangers, Blue Jackets, and Islanders for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference,” Rosen wrote.
Sherwood has been exceptional this season, recording 12 goals and four assists for 16 points through 26 games. More importantly, he currently ranks second in the NHL with 106 hits. The combination of scoring ability and physical edge makes him an ideal addition for contending teams.

The 30-year-old winger is in the final year of a two-year, $3 million contract carrying a $1.5 million cap hit. Sherwood is set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, creating urgency for Vancouver to maximize his trade value.
Rosen noted the Canucks face a difficult decision regarding Sherwood’s future. “The Canucks are in an enviable position with Sherwood, especially if they aren’t inclined to re-sign him, because it’s going to cost them far more than his current $1.5 million AAV, and he’s already 30,” the insider explained.
Vancouver has been actively listening to offers on multiple players as it attempts to get younger. Management wants a first-round draft pick and another asset in exchange for Sherwood, according to previous reports.
The franchise is willing to wait until a team pays that premium. Rosen acknowledged the crowded market for Sherwood’s services. “It will be interesting to see how it plays out with Sherwood and how long it takes for the Canucks to move him if that is indeed going to be their plan.
But the Blue Jackets should be in the mix. It’s a crowded market for a hot commodity,” he wrote. Pittsburgh has been linked to adding physical wingers who can contribute offensively. Sherwood fits that profile perfectly while carrying a manageable cap hit that wouldn’t force significant roster gymnastics.
