Panthers Stars Take Shots At TB Lightning As Preseason Battle Of Florida Devolves Into Absolute Chaos

The Florida Panthers wrapped up their preseason with a bang and a whole lot of bruises on Saturday night, crushing the Tampa Bay Lightning 7-0 in Sunrise. What started as a routine tune-up before the regular season turned into an all-out brawl that left both benches looking half-empty.

By the time the final horn sounded, 312 penalty minutes and 16 ejections had piled up, making it one of the most chaotic ‘Battle of Florida’ showdowns in recent memory.

Did the Panthers and Lightning Just Play the Wildest Preseason Game Ever?

Nobody could quite explain how it spiraled so fast, but both sides seemed determined to make a statement.

After the game, Panthers rookie Mackie Samoskevich didn’t mince words: “Let them do their thing. They didn’t really plan on playing hockey tonight… we’ve got bigger things coming ahead.”

Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky kept it short and dry, saying, “In preseason, it’s better to play hockey.”

It’s not like this came out of nowhere. The tension between the Panthers and Lightning had been simmering all week. Just two nights earlier, Tampa Bay beat Florida 5-2 in another penalty-filled contest that already felt like playoff hockey, only sloppier and angrier.

So when they met again on Saturday, it didn’t take long for tempers to explode.

When It Went Completely Off the Rails

Barely three minutes into the first period, Lightning winger Scott Sabourin cross-checked Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad in the face. That hit lit the fuse. Scraps broke out in every zone, and the penalty boxes might as well have had revolving doors.

By the end of the second, the two teams had already logged over 200 minutes in penalties, the kind of number that makes even the referees shake their heads.

Still, in between all the chaos, the Panthers kept piling up goals. Evan Rodrigues led the way with a hat trick and an assist, while Samoskevich chipped in two goals of his own. Florida went 4-for-17 on the power play, while Tampa Bay couldn’t capitalize on any chances.

Early in the third, defenseman Niko Mikkola was tossed from the game, only for officials to realize a few minutes later that he was still on the ice. Naturally, he picked up an assist on what would’ve been Florida’s eighth goal before the score was erased.

By that point, Tampa Bay’s bench was down to just a few players, and any pretense of structure had vanished. It wasn’t about systems or special teams anymore; it was about pride, frustration, and getting through the final minutes in one piece.

Florida closed out its preseason at 3-4 and will raise its championship banner Tuesday night when the Chicago Blackhawks visit Amerant Bank Arena. The Lightning, meanwhile, open their regular season Thursday against Ottawa.
