Panthers’ Matthew Tkachuk Reveals What Was the Worst Night of His Life

Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk opens up about the worst night of his life amid his injury recovery, following Four Nations tournament.

Defending Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, have had a slow start this season, losing key players to injuries. While veteran forward Brad Marchand has stepped up to lead the offense, the absence of star winger Matthew Tkachuk has been noticeable. As the Panthers aim to climb the Atlantic Division standings, Tkachuk’s journey through recovery and reflection has become a story of perseverance.

After guiding Florida to back-to-back Stanley Cup wins, Tkachuk’s focus shifted to healing and rediscovering his rhythm. His new podcast with his brother Brady, however, revealed a different side of his story — one that goes beyond the ice and into the emotional challenges that come with the game.

What Was the Worst Night of Matthew Tkachuk’s Life?

In the first episode of Wingmen with Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, the Florida Panthers forward talked about the most challenging moments in his hockey career. He spoke of two such games. One was the 4 Nations Faceoff final.

In February’s 4 Nations final, Tkachuk played only 6:47 and did not play the last two periods. The United States lost 3–2 in overtime. Brady Tkachuk and Jake Sanderson scored for the U.S. Connor McDavid scored the winner in overtime with help from Mitch Marner and Cale Makar.

Matthew watched most of the game from the bench, recalling that he said, “Not being able to play and help in this game, but it’s like, ‘F**k, like, do I have to get surgery tomorrow?” Like, what is this gonna… Is my whole year done? Like, I mean, I still wanna win a Stanley,

“I wanna win this game more than anything, but I wanna win a Stanley Cup more than anything too. So it was just a terrible, like, my mentality in that moment was just like, “Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God.”

Later, Tkachuk missed the final 25 games of the 2024-25 season. He stayed on injured reserve but continued to prepare for his return. Before his injury, he had 22 goals and 35 assists in 52 games.

Still, he says this night was not his worst. His toughest night came earlier. It was Game 5 of the 2023 Stanley Cup Final in Las Vegas. The Panthers lost the game 9-3, and the series ended 4-1. Tkachuk did not play Game 5 and had last played in Game 4. And watching his team lose in the Stanley Cup finals was the worst night for him.

“But like I said, you’ve got to lose before you win, at least in some capacity,” Tkachuk said. “Look at my team in Florida, we lost in Vegas, literally, that game 5 in Vegas was the worst night of my life. And then two years later, we were lucky to win two.”

After missing the regular season games, Tkachuk returned in the playoffs and went on to win the Stanley Cup 2025. Tkachuk registered 23 points in 23 games, scoring eight goals. He and Florida had previously won the 2024 Stanley Cup finals. Tkachuk helped both times, and his worst night was a result of his lack of motivation to keep pushing and stay focused.

Later, doctors confirmed Tkachuk’s injury was serious, but he still played through it in the playoffs. He had torn his adductor muscle and was suffering from a sports hernia. The injury dates back to the Four Nations tournament, and all this demonstrates his toughness and determination to win, despite setbacks.
