Panthers HC Admits ‘Fear’ Is Rising As Florida Suffers Nightmare List of Injuries

After two defeats on the road, Florida Panthers head coach speaks up about the repercussions of key players' absence

With the 2025-26 NHL season in full swing, the Florida Panthers started on a high, celebratory note. Three consecutive wins against the Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers, and Ottawa Senators may have imbued the South Florida outfit with the confidence that it could achieve dynasty status by lifting the Cup again this season.

However, the Panthers’ dizzying win streak has ruptured, as the team has suffered two road defeats at the hands of the Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings. Florida has plenty of time to bounce back. Still, the current state is bound to stir some anxiety among the Panthers brass, given the absence of key players like captain Aleksander Barkov and winger Matthew Tkachuk.

Did the Florida Panthers Feel the Heat as Injuries Keep Players Out?

After the Panthers’ shocking 4-1 loss to the Red Wings at the Little Caesars Arena, HC Paul Maurice struggled to find the right word to describe the team’s situation. However, “fear” comes close to what the Panthers seem to face now. “I don’t have the right word, but fear helps. That’s part of it,” said Maurice, as NHL columnist Nicholas J. Costonika reported.

Playing in the fiercely packed Atlantic Division, the Panthers cannot go easy despite their jaw-dropping Stanley Cup victories of the past two years. If Florida manages to clinch a third consecutive victory, it would be the first to do so after many years since the New York Islanders secured four successive wins from 1980-83.

However, meddling in the team’s plans of winning the elusive third Cup and the cherished dynasty status is a painfully long list of injuries. Captain Barkov is out for seven to nine months because of a knee injury. Tkachuk, one of the NHL’s best wingers and an integral part of the team, is recuperating from a nagging torn adductor muscle situation and is expected to remain out until December.

Moreover, Tomas Nosek shall remain out because of an undisclosed long-term injury. Defenseman Dmitry Kulikov is also expected to be away for at least five months after undergoing surgery on Wednesday to repair a labral tear.

How are the Panthers planning to proceed with key players gone? Ahead of facing the New Jersey Devils, Maurice weighed in on the situation: the idea was never to replace the missing players. “You don’t replace these guys that you have out of the lineup. The weight doesn’t get heavier. You just have fewer guys to lift, right?”

Moreover, it could be helpful to shift our perspective a little bit here to who the team has from who they do not. With players like Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad, Brad Marchand, and Sam Reinhart, among others, Florida still has one of the league’s most enviable and well-rounded rosters. Moreover, goalie Sergei Bobrovsky continues to be a valuable asset.

Moreover, lamenting players’ absences could waste plenty of precious time; instead, the trick is to plan around their absence and work your way towards the playoffs. “We’re just trying to play as hard as we can so that when we get to the playoffs, we have invested enough hard that you don’t want to let it slip away. The idea of timing it, it doesn’t work for us. We wouldn’t be able to do that, certainly now. None of these guys are going to be back for five months, so no sense waiting,” said Maurice.

As the Panthers try to claw their way to the third Stanley Cup, will they be able to deal with major absences and emerge at the top?
