“I mean, there’s speculation, but I was never going to take a one or two-year deal, even a three-year deal. You know, that just wasn’t in the cards. You know, I had a goal of what I wanted to be. I wanted to play as long as I could, and that was the goal that I had in the summer, you know. It’s part of why it didn’t work out in Boston,” Marchand said during an interview.

While there could be plenty of arguments against handing long-term contracts to players of Marchand’s age, his recent exploits in Florida testify that he still has much to offer before he considers bidding goodbye. Noting that it is an honor to play in the NHL, the 37-year-old stated that he has no intention of giving up on NHL hockey anytime soon.

“You know, it’s all I’ve ever known and all I’ve ever wanted to do. And I just have always felt like it’d be an injustice to my younger self, you know, the one that always hoped and dreamed to be in the NHL, to walk away from it before I couldn’t play anymore. So that was the goal, to make sure that I could play as long as I could,” Marchand stated.
