The Edmonton Oilers are on the brink after a crushing 4-3 overtime loss to the Anaheim Ducks in Game 4 of their first-round playoff series. With that defeat, Edmonton now trails the series 3-1, and much of the postgame discussion has centered on a highly controversial overtime winner involving Tristan Jarry.
Oilers in Trouble After Disputed Overtime Goal
The game ended in dramatic, and disputed, fashion just 2:29 into overtime.
Ducks forward Ryan Poehling fired a centering pass that deflected off Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse and slid through Jarry’s five-hole, stopping dangerously close to the goal line. As Jarry and Ducks defenseman Jake Walman battled for the loose puck, it appeared to go under Jarry’s left skate right as the whistle sounded.
That’s where the controversy exploded.
Officials did not initially signal a goal, but after a discussion at the timekeeper’s booth, they ruled it a good goal on the ice. That decision proved enormous, because once a goal is called on the ice, replay needs conclusive evidence to overturn it.
With Jarry’s skate obscuring the puck on replay, the NHL Situation Room ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to say the puck never crossed the line, and the goal stood. The decision sparked outrage from fans, analysts, and players, many arguing the officials should never have reversed the original no-signal if they didn’t clearly see the puck cross.
Former NHL player turned analyst Ryan Whitney didn’t mince words, calling it the “worst call” he had ever seen and labeling the ruling “trash,” while sharing a video breakdown of why he believed the puck never crossed the line.
The Bleed Oil Blue channel also ripped the decision, questioning why the whistle wasn’t blown dead sooner when Jarry appeared to have the puck covered, while also voicing concern over Edmonton’s growing list of banged-up stars.
Oilers Nation host Tyler Yaremchuk also blasted the sequence, saying, “That is legitimately some insane shit from the official. He waves it off… and then just changes his mind? Refs just changed their minds for fun and the Oilers get f**ked. WILD.” His reaction reflected the anger among Oilers supporters who felt the process, not just the outcome, was flawed.
Even NHL analyst Paul Bissonnette weighed in, saying he was “gutted” for Edmonton while sharing his own explanation for why he believed it should have been ruled no goal.

The debate is still raging, but one thing is certain: the Oilers have little time to dwell on it.
Now facing elimination, Edmonton returns home for a must-win Game 5 on Tuesday night, needing a victory to keep its season alive.
