Oilers Forward Trent Frederic’s Kamikaze Fight Turns Into a Clown Show as Fans Get Their Jokes Off

Trent Frederic gets dragged by social media users following his naive attempt to rough up one of the league's toughest players

Trent Frederic’s stay in Edmonton has been forgettable so far. The 27-year-old is signed to an eight-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers, worth $30.8 million. However, he has done awfully little to prove that he is worth an annual salary of $3.85 million. In the Oilers’ uneventful season, Frederic hasn’t done much to change the narrative, having accumulated a single point over 17 games.

Frederic’s underwhelming game, combined with the Oilers’ abysmal season, may have triggered the forward to drop his gloves against the Columbus Blue Jackets’ Mathieu Olivier. But things hardly went the way he wanted them to, and social media users seized the occasion to make a laughing stock out of Frederic’s failed attempt to fight the gritty winger.

NHL Fans Troll Edmonton Oilers’ Trent Frederic’s Attempt to Rough Up Mathieu Olivier

The Oilers were ultimately successful in saving face on home ice . Connor McDavid, Jake Walman, and Jack Roslovic went above and beyond to snatch a win for Edmonton. During the second period, Rogers Place arena resounded with loud boos targeted at the Oilers, but captain Connor McDavid orchestrated the team’s comeback in the third period.

McDavid scored two goals in the third period, followed by Walman, who tied the game 4-4, and finally Roslovic scored the breakaway goal to turn the tables for Edmonton.

While praises rained for McDavid and the rest, Frederic had to endure relentless backlash on social media for picking a fight with Olivier in the first period.

Olivier, who is already known for his toughness and physical play, thoroughly overpowered Frederic, leaving him all bruised. “Oh man Frederic didn’t know he was at an all you can eat knuckle sandwiches buffet,” commented one Toronto Maple Leafs fan, emphasizing the Blue Jackets’ winger’s reputation for being tough as nails.

Another social media user drew upon Frederic’s subpar attempt at fighting to leave a snarky comment. “So now we know why Frederic hasn’t fought this year. He’s just not very good at it.”

An NHL fan lauded Frederic for even attempting to rough up Olivier, adding that the Blue Jackets winger is one player they wouldn’t want to be stuck in a brawl with. “Anyone that’s fighting him deserves a standing O. That’s one guy I’m not fighting. Same with Prime Milan Lucic.”

A social media user likened Frederic’s confrontation to a kamikaze fight; of course, Frederic must have known what was in store for him. “Kamikaze fight. He knew he was going to get hurt and fought him anyway.”

While the day ended with a win for the Oilers, it was hardly the ending Frederic had wanted for himself.
