Oilers Trade Rumors: Latest on When Edmonton Could Swing a Trade

Edmonton Oilers trade rumors heat up as an insider reveals when a move could happen and who they're targeting.

The Edmonton Oilers are still trying to find their rhythm as the season rolls on. They’re sitting second in the Pacific Division at 25-19-8. But consecutive losses, including a lopsided 6-2 loss to the Penguins on Thursday, have exposed a few lingering issues.

With their sights set on a long playoff run, Edmonton is already evaluating possible roster improvements. An NHL insider has now offered insight into the team’s thinking and a clearer sense of when the Oilers might be ready to make their next move.

Insider Updates Timeline for Potential Oilers Trade

Edmonton already made a notable move last month by addressing its goaltending. The Oilers acquired Tristan Jarry from the Penguins in a goalie swap that sent Stuart Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak, and a 2029 second-round pick to Pittsburgh. Forward Samuel Poulin also came back to Edmonton in the deal.

Since then, the Oilers’ crease appears more settled with the Jarry–Connor Ingram tandem, while Calvin Pickard remains available as depth if needed. With goaltending stabilized, Edmonton’s focus has shifted elsewhere.

According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, the Oilers are now targeting help up front. “Oilers targeting top nine forwards,” LeBrun said.

While GM Stan Bowman has begun early talks, nothing is close to happening yet. A major reason is the lack of clear sellers around the NHL, as tight standings have kept many teams in the playoff race. “Most likely, an Oilers trade will come after the Olympics,” LeBrun said.

The NHL will pause from February 6 to February 24 for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy. During which no trades can be made. Once play resumes, teams will have a short window before the trade deadline to finalize moves and set their rosters for the playoff push. The NHL postseason is scheduled to begin on April 18, with the race for the Stanley Cup.

Internally, Edmonton is also debating where Ryan Nugent-Hopkins fits best. Whether at center or on the wing alongside Connor McDavid. That decision could play a key role in shaping which position the Oilers target in a trade.

“There is no bad answer,” LeBrun said. “Nugent-Hopkins is effective in either spot. What a luxury to have.” With more wingers likely to be available, that could end up steering Edmonton’s trade plans.

For now, the Oilers shift their focus back to game action as they get set to take on the Washington Capitals on Saturday, with trade rumors still buzzing in the background.
