‘This Is a Whole Different Animal’ — Oilers’ $20M D-Man Ryan Shea Makes Feelings Loud and Clear After Leaving Sidney Crosby’s Penguins

After grinding through three straight one-year, prove-it contracts in Pittsburgh, left-shot defenseman Ryan Shea has finally secured the bag, and he isn’t pulling any punches about the mindset he is bringing to his new home.

On July 1, the Edmonton Oilers signed the 29-year-old to a five-year, $20 million contract carrying a $4 million average annual value. Shea is expected to help replace some of the minutes lost after Darnell Nurse was traded to the San Jose Sharks, and he is embracing the challenge from day one.

Speaking for the first time since signing with Edmonton, Shea said he’s ready for the challenge of joining a Stanley Cup contender led by Connor McDavid.

Ryan Shea Sets High Standards After Joining The Oilers

Shea is coming off the best season of his NHL career. He recorded career highs with six goals, 29 assists and 35 points in 80 games during the 2025-26 campaign while leading the Penguins with a plus-30 rating.

After spending years betting on himself with short-term deals, Shea admitted that his new contract brings a different level of responsibility.

“I’ve been taking one-year, two-year type of deals and just betting on myself, and it obviously ended up going well because I believed in myself,” Shea told NHL.com.

“But this is a whole different animal. You’re going to be here for five years, and you have a chance to win the Cup, and it’s about just getting in there, being a good teammate and performing on the ice, and I’m ready to do that.

“You’re going into a new locker room, so you want to go into camp ready to go and show all the guys and the coaching staff that I’m not messing around,” he added.

Shea spent the past three seasons alongside Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, giving him the rare opportunity to play with one generational superstar before joining another in McDavid.

The veteran defenseman couldn’t hide his excitement about making that transition. “You get Sid that has been around the game for so long and he’s won Cups and done everything you can do pretty much in the League. And now you’re going to be playing with probably the best player to put on skates.”

The welcoming committee didn’t wait long to reach out, either. Before Shea could even pack his bags for Edmonton, he already had welcome texts sitting on his phone from McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Zach Hyman.

After earning his long-term contract through years of hard work in Pittsburgh, Shea now has an opportunity to play a key role on a team with Stanley Cup aspirations. He’ll be looking to prove that Edmonton’s $20 million investment was money well spent.
