The Edmonton Oilers have lost back-to-back games, and they once again have to reflect on what went wrong. They are known for their offense, but have been outscored 8-3 in their last two losses. This season, they have not found consistency that lasts long enough and gives them some room to breathe.
As the trade deadline gets closer, long-term contracts and cap flexibility are becoming bigger talking points. One recent deal has now become a central part of that discussion.
Stan Bowman’s $30.8 Million Trent Frederic Deal Draws Criticism as Oilers Face Cap and Roster Pressure
The Oilers hold a 25-19-8 record and remain in the playoff mix, driven by elite offense led by Captain Connor McDavid. Earlier in January, they showed what their team can do when the engine is running smoothly, like in their 5-0 shutout win over the St. Louis Blues, following a 6-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks.
At the same time, losses such as the 6-2 defeat to the Pittsburgh Penguins have exposed defensive lapses that continue to put pressure on the goaltending group and overall team structure.
Roster management has been a major theme in Jan. 2026 as injuries force the Oilers to make adjustments. Adam Henrique’s move to long-term injured reserve has affected the center depth, while the returns of Jake Walman and Tristan Jarry have helped stabilize the defense and goaltending. Additionally, the recalls of Quinn Hutson and Isaac Howard have added speed and energy up front.
Still, Edmonton is targeting another impact forward before the March 6 trade deadline, as Stan Bowman looks to improve the depth around Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
One of Bowman’s most debated decisions involves Trent Frederic, who signed an eight-year, $30.8 million contract with a $3.85 million cap hit per season. Frederic, a former first-round pick by Boston in 2016, arrived in Edmonton with expectations of providing physical play and depth scoring, but his impact has been questioned.
Allan Mitchell of The Athletic criticized the move, writing, “The worst: Trent Frederic acquisition and long-term deal… Signing a third-line winger for eight years at $3.85 million is never going to be popular, but Frederic’s Oilers career has been poor since his arrival.” Mitchell also pointed to Frederic’s high-ankle sprain before the 2025 trade deadline and the re-injury that followed, adding that while improvement is possible, “right now it’s a big problem for team management.”

Cap space only adds to the pressure. According to Puck Pedia, the Oilers are projected to be $2,492,710 over the cap, with a projected cap hit close to $98 million. With limited financial flexibility and clear roster needs, long-term deals like Frederic’s stand out as moves that could shape Edmonton’s options moving forward.
The Oilers are set to face the Washington Capitals on Jan. 24 in a matchup between two teams pushing for playoff positioning. Edmonton’s path ahead will depend on maintaining offensive production, improving defensive consistency, and finding better roster balance. Still, if they struggle, the questions about Bowman’s decision on Frederic’s contract will continue to follow the team.

Now he will have to buy him out or hold half salary in a trade. Maybe the Bruins will take him back? He was supposed to be what Roy is for the Leafs but that hasn’t worked out.
This isn’t even Bowman’s worst decision. Not going after Gibson is that.
The Oilers are just the same as the Leafs.
How many more times is Trent Frederic going to be talked about? Media can’t find anything new to discuss? This is like the 3080000th article about this topic.
Should fire Bowman. He is the biggest problem
