‘FREE MCDAVID’ — Oilers Fans Demand Major Changes After Second Straight Loss in Stanley Cup Final

Edmonton Oilers fans demand changes and share their thoughts on X after their second straight Stanley Cup Final loss to the Florida Panthers.

The Florida Panthers have officially cemented their status as one of the most impressive teams in recent NHL history, capturing the Stanley Cup for the second consecutive season on Tuesday in their third straight trip to the Stanley Cup Final. They demolished the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6 by a 5-1 final score, thanks to an impressive four-goal night from Sam Reinhart.

On Tuesday, Florida won the Final series against Edmonton 4-2 to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. It was another bitterly disappointing finish to Edmonton’s incredible postseason run.

Oilers Fans Express Their Disappointment After Game 6 Loss

It was another brutal defeat for Oilers fans, who once again had to watch the Panthers raise the Stanley Cup at their expense. They expressed their thoughts on X.

One fan spoke about Connor McDavid and said, “FREE MCDAVID… You suck! How many years [does it take] to get [a] competent goalie and defenseman!? Pylons and goalies who couldn’t stop a beach ball.”

One fan blasted both McDavid and Leon Draisaitl and said, “They never show up when it matters the most.”

Another fan seemed to think that this Edmonton team would probably never win the Stanley Cup and wrote, “Over-rated. This team will never win a championship.”

In a detailed X post, one Oilers fan demanded serious changes and commented, “I think you need to seriously consider trading either McDavid or Draisaitl (packages with Nurse, obviously). Beyond the fact that in two elimination games, they’re pointless, it’s almost impossible to see how you otherwise fill the holes with the salary cap situation. And dump as many of the defensemen as possible. Sign Hart. Fire the coach/GM/president. Sheesh.”

One NHL fan commented, “I say this as a hockey fan, until you guys get [a] real goalie and a much better D man unit, you ain’t winning j*** s***.”

An Edmonton fan demanded changes and said, “Wait and cheer all year just for the team not to show up tonight. Changes have to happen. Two guys’ names can stay off the trade list, the rest can be building blocks to get the roster we need.”

The Stanley Cup Once Again Resides in Florida

The two NHL teams based in the Sunshine State have been on an incredible run over the past few years and have represented the Eastern Conference in the Stanley Cup Final in each of the last six seasons. The Tampa Bay Lightning represented the East in 2020, 2021, and 2022. They defeated the Dallas Stars and Montreal Canadiens in the first two seasons, but lost their chance to three-peat at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche in 2022.

While the Panthers lost in the Stanley Cup Final to the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023, they’ve now won consecutive titles over the Edmonton Oilers in 2024 and 2025. The Stanley Cup better get some sunscreen lotion, because it’s staying in the sunshine for another year.
