Oilers Star Connor McDavid Sends a Crystal Clear Message Over His Commitment to Edmonton

Connor McDavid delivers a clear message about his commitment to the Oilers as Edmonton pushes for another deep playoff run and Stanley Cup pursuit.

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid remains the heartbeat of the franchise. Edmonton is now tied for first place in the Pacific Division, building off back-to-back trips to the Stanley Cup Final, both ending in heartbreak against the Florida Panthers. Once again, the Oilers are firmly in the hunt for a deep playoff run.

And amid all of it, McDavid has delivered a crystal-clear message: his focus, his heart, and his commitment remain firmly in Edmonton.

Connor McDavid on His Commitment to the Oilers

McDavid is once again putting together a dominant season, leading the NHL with 95 points on 34 goals and 61 assists. But this time, it’s not only his on-ice brilliance drawing attention, but his words have also resonated just as strongly.

In a candid letter for The Players’ Tribune, McDavid reflected on his journey, his mindset, and what wearing an Oilers jersey truly means to him, offering fans a rare glimpse into what drives him. The message resonated deeply with Oilers fans.

“I don’t want to be in the Bahamas. I don’t need a break, or a fresh start. I just want to be in Edmonton, playing hockey,” McDavid wrote. “I want to get back there again, whatever it takes. If that sounds like a robot, then I guess I’m a robot.”

McDavid went on to describe the feeling that has driven him since childhood. The excitement of stepping onto fresh ice, the sound of skates cutting in, and the love for the game that never fades. “You hear that first crunch, and you just love it,” McDaid said. “Every day is another chance, another opportunity to choose better.”

Now in his 11th NHL season since going first overall in the 2015 Draft, McDavid’s body of work speaks volumes. He’s piled up 395 goals and 1,177 points across 768 regular-season games, and added another 150 points in 96 playoff contests.

Even after coming up short in the Stanley Cup Final twice, McDavid has rejected the notion that the Oilers are broken or unlucky, making it clear he believes in what this group is building.

“I think there’s this narrative that we’re this unlucky, troubled team,” he said. “The end result hasn’t been there, but it’s not easy getting to two straight Cup Finals. We really pride ourselves on being good playoff performers… I believe in this group. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have signed my extension.”

That extension came on October 6, 2025. McDavid signed a two-year, $25 million deal with the Oilers. The contract maintained his $12.5 million cap hit. A move widely viewed as team-friendly and further proof that winning, not money, is his top priority.

“Because, if I can be real here for a second, I just want to win something again,” McDavid admitted.

The Oilers have two games remaining before the Olympic break, after which McDavid will represent Team Canada in his first Olympic appearance. He’s already tasted international success, winning gold at the 2016 World Championships and again at the 2025 Four Nations Face-Off.

For now, McDavid and the Oilers turn their attention to a marquee matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
