The trade reunited Brady with his brother Matthew and immediately changed the outlook for both franchises. Speaking on a recent TSN 1200 podcast, an insider said, “The reality is, Keith Tkachuk, from the people that I was talking to, was telling everyone, and anyone who would listen, at the Olympics that he was going to get Brady Tkachuk out of Ottawa.
“So when that’s going on in hockey circles, that’s where the noise was coming from. And even that, that’s just him out in the open at the Olympics.”
The remarks offer a different perspective on how speculation surrounding Brady’s future gained momentum. In the past, reports have connected him to a possible reunion with Matthew, but the insider’s comments indicate those conversations were already being fueled during the 2026 Winter Olympics, in which Brady, along with his brother, won gold for Team USA.
Ultimately, Ottawa faced a difficult decision.
Brady reportedly informed management that he did not intend to sign a long-term extension after his current deal expires in 2028. With a full no-movement clause, he controlled much of the process and narrowed his preferred destinations to a small group of teams. Florida quickly emerged as the clear favorite because it offered the opportunity to play alongside Matthew.
The Senators also had reasons beyond contract negotiations to move forward with a trade. Reports suggest speculation surrounding Brady’s future had become a distraction inside the organization.

The timing made the story even more notable, as the trade became official on Father’s Day and arrived during the same week Keith earned induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026.
