NJ Devils Finally Get Some Good News in Aftermath of Failed Quinn Hughes Trade Bid

The Devils miss out on a major trade target, but a positive injury update shifts focus and lifts optimism during a critical point of the season.

The New Jersey Devils entered a stretch of uncertainty after a high-profile trade idea quietly faded away. What followed was not market clarity, but a shift toward something closer and more important.

Rather than dwelling on what never materialized, the focus moved to what could soon return to the lineup. That change in perspective helped ease the impact of the failed Quinn Hughes pursuit.

Jack Hughes’ Recovery Offers Lift After Quinn Hughes Trade Speculation Ends

Quinn is officially off the board for New Jersey after the Vancouver Canucks traded him to the Minnesota Wild on Friday. The move ended speculation that linked him to the Devils because of his brothers, Jack and Luke.

Quinn spent eight seasons in Vancouver and served as captain from 2023 to 2025. He was in rumors due to Canucks’ bad start and approaching the timeline to get an extension. He was in the second-to-last year of his six-year, $47.1 million contract that runs through 2026-27.

With that option gone, the Devils’ focus shifted back to their own injury list. At the center of it is Jack Hughes, who has been sidelined since November after finger surgery.

A post shared by Devils Fanatics on X showed Jack skating with a hockey stick before a recent game. Brett Pesce and Johnathan Kovacevic were also on the ice, offering a rare positive visual.

NHL insider Ryan Novozinsky reshared the clip and confirmed the development.

“This is real. Well, I’m not sure if the pic is, but I’m told that Jack Hughes is, in fact, skating with a stick again. Great progress,” he wrote.

Devils coach Sheldon Keefe previously addressed the injury and the strange circumstances around it. “Well, I think just out of respect for the situation, it doesn’t do anybody any good to dig too much into the details,” Keefe said, via NHL.

Keefe added that the team was satisfied with what it learned from those present. “It was a freak accident that could have happened to anyone,” he said, calling it more bad luck than anything.

Before landing on injured reserve, Jack played 17 games and posted 10 goals and 10 assists. He logged over 21 minutes per game and remained the team’s offensive driver.

New Jersey sits at 18-14-1 and holds sixth place in the Metropolitan Division, remaining close to the playoff mix. Defensive lapses and a steady stream of injuries have prevented the Devils from building momentum during key stretches.

The Quinn trade talk faded quickly once the deal became reality elsewhere, closing that chapter for New Jersey. Even so, seeing Jack back on the ice offered timely relief and shifted the mood at a crucial point in the season.
