NHL Trade Rumors: NJ Devils Check In On $32 Million Serial All-Star

New Jersey Devils discuss adding a veteran star forward to boost scoring and experience as they aim to strengthen their playoff push.

The New Jersey Devils have shown their spirit in the 2024-25 campaign, despite dealing with multiple injuries, including to star forward Jack Hughes. Their structure feels more settled, the team looks more patient, and even with occasional setbacks, the progress is noticeable. That belief in growth naturally leads to a question about where the next round of improvement might come from.

As expectations rise, trade chatter always follows, and in New Jersey, one name keeps drifting closer to the center of the conversation. It did not appear suddenly. Instead, it has been circling quietly, and now it sits close enough that it cannot be ignored.

Why Has Steven Stamkos Entered the New Jersey Devils’ Conversation?

Steven Stamkos, a seven-time All-Star, remains one of the most recognizable forwards of his generation. He is under contract with the Nashville Predators on a four-year, $32 million deal that runs through the 2027-28 season. A full no-move clause makes any potential trade a careful conversation rather than an open market negotiation [web:4]. Still, his name has been mentioned in discussions in New Jersey.

Insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic wrote that “the New Jersey Devils have discussed his name internally, among many other trade targets,” and also confirmed that New Jersey once pursued him during his 2024 free agency period. That background gives this rumor more weight than a typical midseason whisper.

On the ice, the Devils sit 16-10-1 and are positioned well within a tight Metropolitan Division picture. Their scoring remains strong at three goals per game, and the power play is functioning well. Jesper Bratt leads the club offensively, and Nico Hischier carries the team’s goal-scoring edge.

Even with those positives, the results still drift between strong wins and quick reversals. They can defeat teams such as the Red Wings and Blues, yet losses to the Flyers and Stars show how the team is struggling with injuries. With goals against hovering above three per game, a veteran presence who brings control and experience feels like a reasonable idea rather than an overly bold one.

Stamkos has contributed modestly so far in the 2024-25 campaign with 11 points in 27 games. His impact is evident in timely moments, rather than in volume, with two power-play goals and three game-winning goals highlighting his value in critical situations.

He still plays over 17 minutes a night and remains capable of influencing games, even if not at the same pace he once produced in Tampa Bay. A healthy, experienced forward who has handled high-pressure environments for more than a decade carries clear appeal for a team like New Jersey, which is aiming to strengthen its identity.

Nashville does not appear desperate to move him, and LeBrun noted that “there is no guarantee Steven Stamkos goes anywhere this season.” Still, he also stated that the Predators “would definitely listen to calls on him.” Listening does not confirm movement, yet it opens a door. With the trade deadline approaching on March 6, the Devils must decide whether this type of addition aligns with their current trajectory.

New Jersey has built responsibly, added depth through players like Evgenii Dadonov and Connor Brown, and continued to integrate younger pieces such as Seamus Casey and Arseni Gritsyuk. Their lineup carries balance and potential. The question is whether that potential is strengthened by a proven scorer who brings leadership and finishing ability.
