The Florida Panthers looked like a juggernaut on Saturday night, skating circles around the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final. But their dominant night took an unsettling turn when defenseman Niko Mikkola crashed hard into the boards late in the third period.
Mikkola hit the boards shoulder-first and stayed down for a few seconds before skating off under his own power, holding his right shoulder. He didn’t return to the game. That raised immediate concern, especially considering how important the Finnish blueliner has been to Florida’s sensational postseason run. But Panthers head coach Paul Maurice quickly calmed nerves after the game.
Florida Panthers Hope To Have Mikkola Fit for Game 4
“We think he’s going to be OK,” Maurice said during his postgame media availability. The initial signs point to Mikkola avoiding serious injury. According to multiple reports, the Panthers expect him to be available for Game 4 on Monday night in Sunrise.
Mikkola held the line defensively in Game 3 and stepped up in the offensive zone, too. The Finnish defenseman scored twice, marking just the second multi-goal game of his NHL career, and his first multi-goal game in the playoffs. He was instrumental in shifting the momentum Florida’s way after a tightly-contested start.

Mikkola has been a reliable presence on the Panthers’ blue line since signing a three-year, $7.5 million contract with Florida on July 1, 2023. The Finnish defenseman was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the fifth round of the 2015 NHL Draft. Mikkola was traded to the New York Rangers during the 2022–23 season before joining the Panthers as a free agent.
Through the 2025 postseason, Mikkola has anchored a Panthers blue line that thrives on structure and physicality. He’s been leaned on in key penalty-kill situations and late-game defensive shifts, providing a steadying presence alongside Florida’s more mobile defenders. While not always flashy, his ability to win board battles and disrupt entries has quietly been a big part of Florida’s success this spring.
Florida’s 6-2 victory in Game 3 has given them a commanding 3-0 lead in the series against the Hurricanes. They’ll aim to secure their third consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearance with a win in Game 4 on Monday night. While Mikkola’s status for Game 4 is not yet certain, Maurice’s statement postgame indicated that the team expects him to be ready, come Monday night.
