Nikita Kucherov’s Agent Puts Cards on the Table Over $76 Million Star’s Future With Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay Lightning star Nikita Kucherov's agent opens up about his next contract as Tampa Bay prepares for future talks.

Nikita Kucherov is once again putting together a dominant season for the Tampa Bay Lightning, helping keep the team firmly in the hunt for a deep playoff run.

The Lightning sit second in the Atlantic Division, fueled by the play of their superstar winger. As the season goes on, attention is turning toward Kucherov’s long-term future in Tampa Bay, with his agent recently offering insight into his next contract.

Update From Nikita Kucherov’s Agent

Kucherov is currently in the seventh year of his eight-year, $76 million contract. The deal carries an average annual value of $9.5 million and runs through the 2026-27 season.

He will become eligible to sign a contract extension on July 1, 2026.

On the ice, Kucherov continues to perform at an elite level. The Lightning star has recorded 34 goals and 103 points in just 58 games this season, once again placing himself among the NHL’s most productive players.

Despite his continued dominance, discussions about his next contract have remained quiet.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun recently shared details from a conversation he had with Kucherov’s agent, Dan Milstein, regarding the situation. “It’s weird how under-the-radar Kucherov and his next contract has been,” LeBrun said. “Maybe because we just all assume he’s not going anywhere. I asked his agent, Dan Milstein, on Sunday about that next contract discussion coming with Tampa Bay Lightning GM Julien BriseBois.”

Milstein made it clear that, at this stage, there have been no meaningful discussions.

“I honestly have no idea. We haven’t spoken, and on this one, I’m keeping my lips sealed. Nothing will leak from my side, and I would expect the same from Tampa. In the end, it really comes down to three people, not four: Nikita, Julien and me,” Milstein said.

“You’ll just have to wait and see if and when something happens. Truthfully, I don’t know how it will play out or, most importantly, when.”

For now, it remains unclear when Tampa Bay and Kucherov’s camp will begin formal extension talks.

What Could Kucherov’s Next Contract Look Like?

Kucherov becomes eligible to sign an extension on July 1, 2026, but the new NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement could significantly shape the structure of his next deal.

Under the new CBA rules set to take effect in September 2026, the maximum contract length for players re-signing with their current team will drop from eight years to seven. Teams will also face stricter limitations on heavily front-loaded deals, and deferred salary payments will no longer be allowed.

At the same time, the NHL salary cap is set to rise dramatically: from $95.5 million in 2025-26 to $104 million in 2026-27, reaching roughly $113.5 million by 2027-28, the first season of Kucherov’s potential new deal.

With the maximum contract value still capped at 20% of the salary cap in the year it is signed, Kucherov could theoretically command an average annual value as high as $22.7 million if he signs when the cap reaches that projected level.

That would translate to a potential seven-year deal worth roughly $158.9 million.

While it’s unlikely Tampa Bay would commit that level of cap space to a player entering his mid-30s, the rapidly rising salary cap means Kucherov is almost certain to earn a significant raise from his current $9.5 million cap hit.

For now, though, both sides appear focused on the present, where Kucherov continues to lead the Lightning as they push toward another playoff run.
