‘Oh My God, It’s Happening’ — NHL World Takes Notice as Oilers’ $74M D-Man Darnell Nurse Inches Closer to Being Traded

The long-running speculation surrounding Darnell Nurse’s future in Edmonton may finally be reaching its conclusion.

For years, Oilers fans have debated Nurse’s large contract and inconsistent performances. Now, Sportsnet’s Mark Spector reports that Edmonton and the veteran defenseman could be “headed for a breakup” after a disappointing 2025-26 season.

If a trade happens, it would be one of the most significant moves of the Connor McDavid era.

Darnell Nurse Trade Talk Reaches New Level as Oilers Prep For 2026

This isn’t the usual offseason rumor mill. According to Spector, Oilers general manager Stan Bowman is expected to meet with Nurse in the coming days to discuss his future and the team’s desire to explore a trade before next season begins.

“Conversations with several current and former employees all lead to the same place: the Oilers are ready and willing to trade Nurse as soon as they are able,” Spector said.

Nurse is entering the fifth season of the eight-year, $74 million contract he signed in 2021, carrying a hefty $9.25 million annual cap hit.

While the 31-year-old still logs significant minutes and remains an important part of Edmonton’s blue line, his performances no longer match the price tag. On a team trying to maximize every dollar around Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, that cap hit has become increasingly difficult to justify.

As news of the report spread, reactions quickly poured in from around the hockey world.

Oilers Daily captured the shock felt by much of the fanbase, posting: “Oh my god, it’s happening.”

Puckin Around Podcast host Karman Gill suggested that attitudes toward Nurse have shifted following last season’s struggles. “Seems like the Oilers and Darnell Nurse are going to be moving on from one another. I was always a huge fan of Darnell. But, last season changed a lot.”

Meanwhile, Oilersnation writer Baggedmilk hinted at the drama that could follow if trade talks gain momentum: “This should get interesting.” NHL writer Matt Kalman was even more skeptical, pointing to the challenges of moving a contract of Nurse’s size: “Good luck with that.”

Despite the growing trade buzz, the Oilers can’t simply move Nurse wherever they want.

His full no-movement clause remains active through the upcoming season, giving him complete control over any potential deal. If Nurse decides he wants one more opportunity to chase a Stanley Cup alongside McDavid and Draisaitl, Edmonton’s hands would effectively be tied.

That reality makes Bowman’s upcoming discussions with Nurse especially important.

The timing is important because Nurse’s full no-movement clause remains in place through next season before converting to a 10-team no-trade list in 2027. That makes this offseason his last chance to have complete control over his destination.

If he agrees to waive the clause, teams like the San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Detroit Red Wings could emerge as potential landing spots.

For now, everything hinges on Nurse’s willingness to consider a change.
