The Ottawa Senators have only recently recovered from a four-game losing streak by dealing a tight 2-1 defeat to the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday at the Canadian Tire Centre. At one point, the Senators exhibited remarkable form and energy despite the prolonged absence of Captain Brady Tkachuk.
However, the Sens could not sustain their fiery form for long, with the team’s position in the standings soon taking a hit. The Senators sit at the very bottom of the Atlantic Division. GM Steve Staios, however, is not sitting idle. His search for upgrades continues with a report about his interest in a 29-year-old defenseman emerging.
Ottawa Senators Reportedly in Contention For Calgary Flames D-Man Rasmus Andersson
If there is one Calgary Flames player who has been at the trade rumor spotlight, it is Rasmus Andersson. The Flames’ 2025-26 season has been forgettable enough for trade rumors to pick up speed unabated. Andersson is in the final year of his six-year $27.3 million contract. He is one player whose name will continue to appear in trade rumors as the deadline approaches.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are foremost among the teams most aggressively linked with Andersson. However, the Leafs’ almost empty cupboard restricts the Toronto front office from making a truly competitive offer to the Flames’ liking. Moreover, as Mike Gould pointed out in a contribution to the Daily Faceoff, ever since Brad Treliving parted ways with the Flames to join hands with the Leafs, things have been a little strange.
“The Flames have conspicuously not made a deal with the Leafs since Treliving left for Toronto in 2023, with rumors and speculation abound that Treliving will have to pay a considerably higher price than other GMs to acquire any players from his former team,” Gould reported for the Daily Faceoff.
Now, the Senators have also joined the several teams interested in acquiring the 29-year-old defenseman. Staois has reportedly already attempted in that direction. “The club has also kicked tires with the Calgary Flames on right-shot defenceman Rasmus Andersson, but he’d have to be willing to sign an extension in Ottawa to make a move,” Bruce Garrioch reported for the Ottawa Citizen.
However, the Senators’ roster believes that the team’s current deplorable state is something it can address through teamwork. “‘It’s within our group. We’ve got to dig deep right now. It’s not that we’re running out of time, but there’s half a season left, and to be honest, we’ve got a lot of ground to make up. We all have the belief in our group that we can do that,’” noted Sens defenseman, Jake Sanderson.
Among other teams reportedly interested in pursuing Andersson are the Detroit Red Wings, the Dallas Stars, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Vegas Golden Knights. Trade speculation surrounding the standout blueliner has been around for a while now, and it is more likely than not that Andersson will be moved ahead of the deadline.
