NHL Trade Rumors: Former Canadiens Trade Target’s Future Up in the Air

While the season progresses through its early weeks, reports suggest uncertainty surrounds the future of a former Canadiens trade target.

The Montreal Canadiens have been on a hot run lately. Despite losing their season opener against Toronto, they have since dropped just two games. With eight wins, they are firmly at the top of the Atlantic Division.

But the franchise isn’t done just yet. The management had made it clear that while they might be satisfied with their current lineups, if the chance to make future trades arises, they will be ready. But for one former Canadiens target, that timeline seems to have closed already.

What Are the Chances of Jordan Kyrou Joining the Canadiens?

All summer long, the Canadiens remained interested in bringing St. Louis veteran Jordan Kyrou to Montreal. While their front line was already stacked with the duo of Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, adding Kyrou to the lineup meant bringing some much-needed grit.

The right-winger was part of the Blues when they lifted the Stanley Cup back in 2019. That veteran experience made him an ideal candidate for the Canadiens. According to the Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the Blues were in talks with several teams, including Montreal, for a supposed trade.

But four months later, the trade still hasn’t materialized. And while the Canadiens continue to do well, according to RG’s Marco D’Amico, things might be up in the air for Kyrou. A Western Conference source informed D’Amico that things are complicated in St. Louis.

While they have brought in some young offensive talent, the defense is still stuck with aging veterans, leaving the franchise caught somewhere between retooling and rebuilding. Kyrou, at 27, is stuck in the middle of the whole setup.

“St. Louis has to be the most intriguing team to me going into the stretch,” the source told D’Amico. “They’ve done a good job of retooling on the fly but are kind of caught in the middle with a young offense and an aging defense.”

The source believes that if the Blues don’t stabilize quickly, they may resort to aggressive selling to regain competitiveness. They continued, “Brayden Schenn could be made available should they continue this way, and many teams will be interested, but I wonder about Jordan Kyrou, Colton Parayko, and Robert Thomas.”

According to them, while multiple teams might be interested in acquiring Kyrou, the Blues continue to observe for now. “Are they going to want to undergo a retool or potential rebuild?” speculated the source. They believe it could change the face of the trade market overnight.

“That’s going to create some noise, maybe not immediately, but closer to the trade deadline, if the Blues remain a bottom-feeding team in the standings,” they added. The source believes that while Columbus could significantly impact the market, for now, they continue to observe.
