Florida Panthers Vice Chairman and minority owner Douglas Cifu has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL following a string of inflammatory social media posts directed at a Toronto Maple Leafs fan and Canada. The incident occurred on Sunday night, May 11, shortly after Florida’s Game 4 win against the Maple Leafs in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Douglas Cifu Faces NHL Suspension Over Vulgar Comments and Political Remarks
The league confirmed the decision Monday evening, citing the content of Cifu’s posts as “unacceptable and inappropriate.” In a statement, the NHL announced that Cifu is barred from any and all involvement with both the team and the league until further notice. An in-person meeting with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has been scheduled but no date has been made public.
Cifu reportedly used his now-deleted X (formerly Twitter) account to respond to a Leafs fan in a heated exchange that quickly went viral. Screenshots captured from the account, which appeared under the handle @Dougielarge, showed Cifu lashing out with a post that referred to Canada as the “51st state” and included profane language and pro-Israel sentiments amid broader remarks about the Israel-Palestine conflict.
In one particular message timestamped shortly after the Panthers’ 2-0 victory, the account allegedly belonging to Cifu posted: “Eat s*** 51st state anti-semite loser. Israel now and forever. Until ever [sic] last Hamas rat is eliminated.” The response was aimed at a user who had accused Israel of using starvation as a war tactic.
Following backlash, the account was first made private and then deactivated. The league responded swiftly, releasing a public statement confirming Cifu’s suspension and the future meeting with Bettman.
This isn’t the first time Cifu has sparked criticism for online behavior. In a separate incident in 2024, he reportedly insulted another user by calling them a “sad sack of s***,” mocked their financial status, and questioned their mental abilities in a series of troubling remarks. That post also led to significant public scrutiny.
Cifu, who is also the CEO and co-founder of Virtu Financial, has long been involved with the Panthers alongside majority owner Vincent Viola. The two launched the high-frequency trading firm in 2008. Outside of hockey, Cifu holds a board position with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and resides in Jupiter, Florida.
Game 5 Looms Amid Panthers-Leafs Rivalry
The timing of the controversy is particularly notable. The playoff series between Florida and Toronto is currently tied 2-2, with both teams trading wins on home ice. Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday night at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.
Despite the NHL’s disciplinary action, the Panthers have not issued a separate statement regarding Cifu. The suspension places a spotlight on the league’s expectations for conduct from team executives, especially during a high-stakes postseason.
As the Panthers continue their push toward the Stanley Cup, the incident involving Douglas Cifu has added a layer of off-ice tension to an already intense series.
