The Ottawa Senators have stayed in the middle of the Eastern Conference race through most of the season, but the final stretch has brought more attention to how the group is handling pressure. The Senators are fighting for the second wild card spot, tied with teams like Detroit and Columbus, but off-ice concerns are growing for the team.
The Senators have not separated themselves from the crowded Atlantic, and only seven games are left in the regular season. As the schedule tightens, focus has shifted toward internal conversations, including captain Brady Tkachuk and recent comments tied to the organization.
John Shannon Points to Growing Strain Inside Ottawa
Tkachuk remains central to Ottawa’s push, but recent reporting suggests the situation around the team has become more complicated. Speaking on Donnie & Dhali, insider John Shannon addressed the topic directly and said, “Well, obviously there’s a ton of tension in Ottawa.” He added that the current situation has been influenced by both performance and decisions made during a tight playoff race.
Shannon explained how certain choices have added pressure, especially around player availability and results. Talking about goalie Linus Ullmark, he said, “So had he said, no, I don’t want to play against Tampa, which he said, and they lost, and he had gone in and shut out the Panthers, there would be no controversy. There would be nothing. But Florida scored on the first two shots they put on him. He was down 5-0 in the first 15 minutes.”
Shannon then pointed out the impact of that outcome, adding, “You know that that’s a problem. And so it’s put Travis [Green] in a really tough spot. I think it puts Steve Staios and Dave Poulin in a tough spot.”

The situation has also been shaped by comments made outside the team. Keith Tkachuk spoke on a podcast and criticized how players are being managed, saying, “Holy Christ, (Brady’s) whole team: ‘Oh, my pinky hurts. I’m out for 6–8 (weeks),’” and later added, “I just had a bad sleep, so I can’t play today. Oh my god… disgusting. I can’t play back-to-back. Mismanagement.”
He also questioned Brady’s usage, saying, “You didn’t play that much last game either. I just wanted to throw that in there,” and added, “Why play him a lot, and it’s in a big game?”
Shannon also addressed how public platforms can affect a team, especially when players are involved in outside discussions. He said, “But they’re going to have to be responsible for what is said on their podcast. And that’s put the Senators in a bad spot.”
He continued by explaining the challenge for the organization, saying, “And here’s the tough spot for Ottawa. If Ottawa had said to Brady, you know what, we don’t want you to do a podcast, that’s just another reason for Brady to say, I’m not sure I’m happy here.”
He concluded by emphasizing how difficult the situation has become, stating, “It’s really, really tough, and it’s ugly. I can tell you right now, I’ve been told by somebody inside the organization there’s a ton of tension right now.”
With Ottawa still in the playoff race, the focus remains on results, but the discussion around internal dynamics continues to follow the team as the season moves forward.
