The New York Islanders have experienced an inconsistent start to their season. After dropping three consecutive games to open the campaign, the franchise rebounded with four straight victories. However, Philadelphia snapped that winning streak Saturday in a shootout.
Many observers believe the Islanders need roster reinforcements to address offensive vulnerabilities exposed in Saturday’s loss. While trade speculation swirls, reports suggest the franchise may be willing to field offers for a veteran center in the final year of his $30 million contract.
Why Might The Islanders Listen To Trade Offers For Jean-Gabriel Pageau?
The Islanders have posted mixed results through their opening stretch. After narrow losses to Pittsburgh and two other opponents, New York found its rhythm before facing Philadelphia on October 25.
By the second period, the Islanders had a comfortable 2-0 lead before Philadelphia rallied to force a shootout. Goals by Matvei Michkov and Trevor Zegras quickly sealed the deal for the Flyers and secured two points for the Flyers.
The loss reinforced concerns the Islanders had addressed weeks earlier: the need for roster additions. However, acquiring new talent requires moving existing pieces. Center Jean-Gabriel Pageau has emerged as a potential trade candidate.
Pageau has struggled offensively in recent seasons, intensifying trade speculation around him. Insider David Pagnotta discussed the situation on the “Sekeres & Price Podcast.”
Pagnotta noted Pageau is in the final year of his six-year, $30 million contract and holds a modified no-movement clause allowing him to block trades to half the league.
“I don’t think they’re overly motivated just yet. I think they’ll listen. I think Matthew Darche, the new GM there on the Islanders, is going to listen,” Pagnotta said. However, he emphasized Darche is currently gathering information and evaluating options.
“For him, it’s just collecting information right now, seeing what the options are going to be available to them, and then exploring those later on in the season potentially,” Pagnotta explained. “Both with Pageau and their captain, Anders Lee.”
The insider believes Darche wants to assess the team’s trajectory before making decisions. He pointed out that the Islanders were selected first overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, adding elite prospect Matthew Schaefer to the organization. That investment suggests the team deserves patience.
However, Pagnotta acknowledged New York’s urgency to return to playoff contention. “So, if they’re on the cusp or in the thick of things, then they’re going to have to juggle the idea of whether or not they want to move out a guy like Pageau,” he added.
Pagnotta believes Pageau, despite recent struggles, elevates his performance in high-pressure situations. Whether the Islanders move him depends on their playoff positioning as the trade deadline approaches.
