‘People Are Lying’ — NHL Insiders Join Forces to Serve Toronto Maple Leafs Some Bad News

The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a franchise-shaping decision after moving on from Craig Berube. With a new front office leading the way and expectations rising around a roster built to contend, the search for the next head coach has become one of hockey’s biggest storylines.

As rumors intensified around one highly regarded candidate, several prominent NHL insiders stepped in with a much different message, setting the stage for an important reality check.

NHL Insiders Unite to Shut Down David Carle-to-Maple Leafs Rumors

The bad news for Toronto is that it appears David Carle will not be the team’s next head coach.

What started as legitimate interest from the Maple Leafs eventually evolved into widespread speculation that the University of Denver bench boss was close to taking over behind Toronto’s bench. However, multiple notable insiders have firmly rejected those reports and clarified where things actually stand.

According to Frank Seravalli, Toronto’s front office did make contact with Carle early in the process, but the discussions never advanced to the interview stage. Sharing an update on X, Seravalli wrote, “Sources said David Carle and the Leafs brass had a pleasant conversation early in their process where he politely declined an invitation to interview for their head coaching vacancy. From here, feels like Carle is a man on a mission to fix #cawlidgehockey.”

This update significantly altered the narrative surrounding Toronto’s search. Rather than being on the verge of a hiring, the Maple Leafs were informed early that Carle was not prepared to pursue the opportunity at this time.

As speculation continued to spread online, Colby Cohen delivered perhaps the strongest denial. Posting on X, Cohen stated, “I can tell you all, with 100% certainty, David Carle is not close to, nor going to coach the #LeafsForever this season. Not 99% sure, I’m 100% sure. People are lying and making things up.”

His statement also pushed back against reports suggesting a deal was nearing completion, despite no substantial developments indicating that was the case.

Another well-connected insider, David Pagnotta, added further context. He reported that Toronto’s conversations with Carle never progressed beyond an initial discussion, writing, “I’m told that while Toronto has spoken with David Carle, that’s the extent of things. No formal interview has taken place. I’m told Carle has told the Leafs now is not the right time for him.”

Chris Johnston also addressed the situation after fake social media accounts helped fuel the rumor cycle. Johnston warned fans directly, posting, “Beware of fake accounts, folks! There is no smoke to the Leafs/David Carle rumors being circulated right now.”

While Carle is no longer a realistic option, Toronto’s coaching search remains active. General manager John Chayka is reportedly conducting a broad evaluation process and is not rushing toward a decision before the NHL Draft.

The organization has already spoken with numerous candidates and is expected to narrow the field after additional evaluations during the NHL Combine.

For now, though, the biggest takeaway is clear: the candidate many fans hoped would become Toronto’s next head coach has reportedly removed himself from consideration, forcing the Maple Leafs to continue their search elsewhere. As things stand, Jay Woodcroft could be the next man up, with Peter Laviolette’s name also being thrown into the mix.
