Less than a month before NHL free agency begins, Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers is reportedly leaning toward a more low-key destination. The 28-year-old winger, set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, is coming off a strong season but may be prioritizing lifestyle and atmosphere over bright lights and major markets.
NHL Insider Provides Major Update on Nikolaj Ehlers’ ‘Preferred’ Destination
Ehlers, who has spent his entire nine-year NHL career with the Jets, is said to prefer playing in a “quiet place,” according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger. Speaking on the “FanDuel OverDrive” show, Dreger revealed that while Winnipeg would like to keep Ehlers, he might be looking for something different.
“There’s a sense with Ehlers that he’d like to go to a place that’s pretty quiet,” Dreger said. “And when I think of Winnipeg compared to Toronto or Montreal or New York or any of the big markets, Winnipeg is small and would be pretty quiet.”

Dreger also noted that finding a location more reserved than Winnipeg could be difficult, especially if Ehlers also wants to join a competitive team. Still, if he hits the open market, then he is expected to draw significant attention.
Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders Among Speculated Fits
Ehlers’ preference might influence which teams pursue him. The Ottawa Senators, often regarded as a mid-size and more laid-back market, have been linked to Ehlers. Their situation could align well with what he’s reportedly looking for – an NHL city with less media glare and pressure.
Meanwhile, the New York Islanders are also emerging as a serious contender. According to The Hockey News’ Stefan Rosner, the Islanders previously attempted to trade for Ehlers, and they remain interested. Their weak power play and need for a consistent scoring winger could make Ehlers an ideal fit, especially with Brock Nelson reportedly moving on.
Last season, Ehlers scored 63 points in 69 regular-season games and added seven points in eight playoff appearances. His ability to contribute on both ends of the ice and produce on the power play makes him one of the top free agents in the 2024–25 class. Daily Faceoff projects he could command a six-year deal worth roughly $48.6 million.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently identified Ehlers as one of the best forwards available, second only to Mitch Marner, assuming the Maple Leafs’ winger hits the market.
While much remains uncertain, Ehlers’ free agency storyline has quickly become one of the most intriguing to watch this summer. If his desire for a quieter setting holds true, then it may narrow the field but won’t diminish the demand.
