NHL Insider Clears the Air on Brady Tkachuk’s Future in Ottawa Amid Senators Retool

The Ottawa Senators closed another promising season with more frustration after getting swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Carolina Hurricanes. Injuries on the blueline, inconsistent offense, and a struggling power play exposed several issues that now place the organization under pressure heading into the summer.

As the front office begins evaluating roster changes, outside attention has focused on captain Brady Tkachuk and whether Ottawa can convince its core group that the franchise is moving in the right direction.

This growing speculation recently led one NHL insider to address where things currently stand between Tkachuk and the Senators organization.

Darren Dreger Downplays Brady Tkachuk Exit Rumors During Senators’ Retool

Tkachuk remains at the center of Ottawa’s offseason conversation following the team’s playoff exit, but NHL insider Darren Dreger believes there is still strong alignment between the captain and the franchise despite the increasing speculation.

Speaking during a recent appearance on TSN Overdrive, Dreger discussed the upcoming meetings involving Tkachuk, general manager Steve Staios, and head coach Travis Green. Dreger explained that the conversations should not immediately be viewed as a warning sign for Ottawa fans.

“I don’t think that the Ottawa Senators have any appetite to explore anything other than continuing to work with and build around Brady Tkachuk,” Dreger said. He added that the only scenario where the situation changes is if “the Tkachuk family, headed by Brady, decides” they want something different in the future.

Dreger suggested the meetings could simply be part of the organization gathering information after another disappointing playoff ending. According to the TSN insider, Ottawa’s management group likely wants to understand how Tkachuk feels about the locker room, roster structure, and long-term direction before making major offseason decisions.

“It doesn’t feel like this is going to be ominous,” Dreger explained. “And I don’t think it’s going to change this offseason.”

The comments arrive after weeks of heavy speculation surrounding Ottawa’s captain following the team’s first-round elimination. Tkachuk previously addressed those rumors during his season-ending media availability and made it clear he has not asked out of Ottawa.

“I feel like I’ve answered this hundreds of times,” Tkachuk said. “None of those things ever came out of my mouth.” He also called the continued trade speculation “frustrating” and described it as “a distraction.”

While several teams, including the Florida Panthers, New York Rangers, and St. Louis Blues, continue getting linked to hypothetical blockbuster scenarios, Ottawa still maintains significant control over the situation. Tkachuk remains under contract through the 2027-28 season with a full no-movement clause already active.

Dreger also hinted that Ottawa’s offseason focus may lean more toward adding help around its captain rather than considering dramatic roster changes. He noted that Staios could pursue bigger additions this summer, including a top-four defenseman and another top-six forward after the Senators struggled offensively against Carolina.

The Senators’ captain still represents the identity Ottawa wants to build around. Even during a difficult playoff series, Tkachuk’s combination of physicality and leadership continue to make him one of the franchise’s most important pieces heading into another pivotal offseason.
