Patrick Kane is officially heading back to Chicago.
The superstar has agreed to a two-year, $16 million contract worth $8 million annually, bringing the franchise icon back to the team where his legendary NHL career began.
After spending the past three seasons away from Chicago with the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings, Kane is returning to the Blackhawks at 37 years old. The reunion has generated plenty of excitement across the NHL, but the contract itself has left many fans and analysts stunned.
Fans React to Patrick Kane’s $16M Blackhawks Return
Kane may be entering the later stages of his career, but he showed last season that he can still produce at a high level. The veteran winger recorded 57 points, including 16 goals and 41 assists, in 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings during the 2025-26 season.
The Blackhawks believe Kane can play an important role in the development of Connor Bedard’s nascent NHL career.
However, while the reunion has been widely celebrated, the $8 million annual salary has raised plenty of eyebrows.
NHL insider Josh Yohe admitted he initially misunderstood the contract. “When I saw the Kane contract, I thought it was two years, $8 million total. Which seemed reasonable. Still happy for Chicago that a franchise icon is back. The price is a little steep though,” Yohe wrote.
Others were even more surprised.

Jason Gold was stunned, reacting, “Wait…that’s just crazy.” NHL analyst Carlo Mario took a more positive view, simply saying, “Wow. Good for Kaner!”
Analyst Nick Ziegler also appeared surprised by the annual value, writing, “$8 million AAV?! Wow.” Sports journalist Matthew Gideon was far more critical, calling it “a bad deal.”
PHWA member Adam Kierszenblat also questioned the decision, saying, “I get that the NHL salary cap is going up, but $8 million per season for Patrick Kane at this stage of his career is wild.”
Even with that $8M cap hit, Chicago still has a shade over $5M to play with, if they wish to add more talent to this squad to accelerate Bedard’s development.
A Storybook Return to Chicago
Kane spent the first 16 seasons of his NHL career with the Blackhawks.
He helped Chicago win three Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013, and 2015 while collecting some of the biggest individual awards in hockey, including the Calder Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, Hart Trophy, and Art Ross Trophy.
Now, he is returning to the organization as one of the most storied players in franchise history.
The two-year contract includes a full no-movement clause, making it likely that Kane will finish his career in Chicago.
The $8 million cap hit has raised plenty of eyebrows, especially given Kane’s age. But Chicago is not simply paying for what he can produce on the ice.
Kane brings experience and star power to Chicago’s young core, especially Bedard. The contract may be expensive, but for Blackhawks fans, seeing their franchise icon return could make the $8 million AAV easier to swallow, especially considering the fact that the franchise has sufficient cap space to work with.
