The free agency season madness has slowed down for sure, but it still comes with its fair share of surprises. While trades between teams are exciting developments to follow, contract extensions offer an equally thrilling parallel storyline.
In their recent free agency move, the Philadelphia Flyers have signed a five-year deal with 24-year-old defenceman Cam York. York, a former restricted free agent, has agreed to a $25.75 million contract extension, bearing a cap hit of $5.15 million annually.
The California native, whom the Flyers drafted in the first round of the 2019 NHL draft, has spent his entire career in the league with the team. York has accumulated 77 points (58 assists and 19 goals) over 235 regular-season games.
Fans Have Diverse Reactions to Cam York’s Contract Extension With the Philadelphia Flyers
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman took to his X account to drop a major update. According to Friedman, rumors of the Flyers inking a contract extension for York were resounding. Soon after, the deal became a reality, sparking considerable discourse on the issue.

Many fans opined that the deal with York was as good as it gets, mainly because the contract extension was economical.
“Flyers fans will hate it but this is a steal”, pointed out an X user.
Another echoed the same view.
“Solid deal locks up a key piece without overpaying,” another X user said.
A third chimed in with a similar comment, admiring a well-executed deal by the Flyers.
“Cam and his agent left money on the table. Great deal for Flyers,” the user said.

Others believed the move wasn’t a cost-saving measure at all. If anything, it was quite the opposite. One social media user bluntly stated that the Flyers had paid more than what York warrants: “Overpaid.”
Another quickly targeted the Flyers’ GM, Daniel Briere, regarding what they thought was a poor, uneconomical decision.
“Overpayment l, Briere sucks,” the user said.
Yet others questioned York’s caliber as a player and, thus, as a consequence, the team’s decision to retain the 24-year-old.
“It’s a Total waste of contract dollars being spent on a #3 pairing defender. Undersized and average at best!” commented one user who viewed the deal as not the best use of resources on the part of the Flyers.
A few others voiced similar opinions, with one raising questions about York’s abilities as a defenseman.
“Another guy can’t play defense extended lol,” the user said.
Another fan highlighted a significant development that could impact York’s time with the Flyers this season onwards.
“Now that York can focus on the ice instead of dealing with Coaching issues, big season loading for him,” the user commented.
The X user refers to the “heated verbal exchange” between former Flyers head coach John Tortorella and York when the team was away to play in Toronto. The exchange played a crucial role in Tortorella’s dismissal earlier this year.

The Flyers’ decision to extend York’s contract divides the community. The team last made the playoffs in 2020 and needs some renewed energy. Will the 24-year-old defenseman be able to become the team’s cornerstone as it pursues the playoffs again?
