‘I’d Consider That a Long Shot’ — New York Rangers Unlikely to Chase Future Hall of Fame Forward

The New York Rangers have spent much of the offseason reshaping their roster after a disappointing season.

With several major changes already made, the Rangers are still looking for help up front. However, one potential target appears unlikely to return to Broadway.

Rangers Unlikely to Pursue Patrick Kane

Patrick Kane is currently an unrestricted free agent after completing a one-year, $3 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

Despite being 37 years old, Kane showed that he can still make an impact in this league. The future Hall of Famer recorded 57 points in 67 games last season and remained a dangerous playmaker, particularly on the power play.

With Kane still available, a reunion with the Rangers naturally became a popular idea among fans.

Kane previously spent part of the 2022-23 season with New York after being traded by the Chicago Blackhawks. However, his time with the Rangers was limited after a hip injury eventually required surgery.

However, according to NHL insider Vincent Z. Mercogliano, a return to New York is unlikely. “I’ve lost count of how many Rangers fans have asked about a reunion with Patrick Kane, whose New York tenure was short-lived and marred by a hip injury that required surgery,” Mercogliano reported.

“I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble, but I’d consider that a long shot.”

Rangers Taking a Different Direction

The Rangers’ reported lack of interest in Kane reflects the direction the franchise has taken this summer.

New York has moved away from several veteran players and is instead building a younger, faster and more dynamic roster under new head coach Mike Sullivan.

General manager Chris Drury made one of his biggest moves this summer, sending a significant package of picks to the Vegas Golden Knights for 25-year-old winger Pavel Dorofeyev.

The Rangers then made one of the summer’s biggest moves by trading veteran center Vincent Trocheck to the Utah Mammoth. In return, New York added defenseman Sean Durzi, top center prospect Cole Beaudoin and a 2027 third-round draft pick

Rather than overpaying for an aging star like Patrick Kane or crippling their future assets for Matthew Knies, Drury made a calculated move to bring in Oliver Bjorkstrand.

The overall strategy is clear. The Rangers want to become younger and more athletic without sacrificing their ability to compete.

Kane, meanwhile, appears to be heading toward an emotional decision. The Buffalo Sabres represent the hometown opportunity, while the Chicago Blackhawks offer the chance to return to the organization where he became a franchise legend.

A reunion with Kane would certainly have sentimental appeal, but New York is no longer building its roster around nostalgia.
