Hockey demands immense grit and resilience from every player who steps on the ice. New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal understands this better than most after enduring a brutal 2024-25 season that tested both his body and mind.
The $73.2 million star finally has encouraging news for fans who’ve watched him battle through one of the most challenging periods of his career.
What Did Mathew Barzal Reveal About His Recovery Progress?
The 2024-25 campaign proved to be a nightmare for New York Islanders forward Matthew Barzal. He managed just 30 games while accumulating 20 points (six goals and 14 assists), spending most of the season watching from the sidelines.
The nightmare began early when Barzal sustained an upper-body injury on October 30, 2024, against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Barzal fought his way back to the lineup, showing the determination that made him a cornerstone of the Islanders’ franchise. However, his season ultimately ended on February 1. During a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Barzal went down after blocking a slapshot. That moment ended his season and sent him back to the medical staff.
The knee injury required a minor procedure, and former Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello made it clear in March that Barzal wouldn’t return until he was completely healthy. Now, months later, that patience appears to be paying off.
Barzal recently appeared on the “Fore Play Podcast Plus” and provided the update fans have been waiting for. While his injury has healed completely, the 28-year-old is taking a measured approach to his return.
“I haven’t been skating as much as I usually do in the summer,” Barzal explained. “Right now, just coming off my injury, it’s fully healed and everything, and I’m feeling solid, but I still got some time.”
He continued, “I’m using the time that I have, right? It’s been hard not getting on the ice every single day and having to go out and stickhandle in my flip-flops.”
Why Was This Injury So Devastating for Barzal?
The timing couldn’t have been worse for a player coming off his best offensive season. Barzal, who was drafted 16th overall by the Islanders in the 2015 draft, had established himself as one of the team’s most reliable point producers.
His 2023-24 campaign was particularly special, as he recorded 80 points in 80 regular-season games and scored a career-high 23 goals.
For someone accustomed to being on the ice nearly every day, the extended absence took a serious mental toll. During the Islanders’ season-ending media availability, Barzal opened up about the psychological challenges of watching his teammates compete while he recovered.
“It puts things into perspective when you miss this much time, the little things like being around the boys and competing,” Barzal said. “It was tough.”

The competitive fire that drives elite athletes made the situation even more difficult. Barzal described the unique satisfaction that comes from team success and how painful it was to miss those moments.
“There’s nothing better than going on the road and winning a big game,” he explained. “Not being a part of that kind of stuff killed me. I’m not sugarcoating it, it was horrible mentally, but I’m fortunate to have a lot of great guys in this room and great staff, coaches, and management to lift my spirits.”
With Barzal’s latest update indicating full healing, Islanders fans can finally look forward to seeing their star forward back in action. The organization’s cautious approach to his return suggests it has learned from past experiences and won’t rush him back before he’s truly ready to contribute at the highest level.
