NHL World Reacts As Nathan MacKinnon Gets Thrown Out for Leaving Oilers’ Connor Ingram in Concussion Protocol

NHL reacts after Nathan MacKinnon receives a major penalty and game misconduct following a collision with the Oilers' Connor Ingram.

Colorado Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon found himself at the center of controversy Tuesday night after a collision with Edmonton Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram during a tense matchup against the Edmonton Oilers.

The incident quickly became the biggest storyline of the game, even overshadowing Edmonton’s 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

The play occurred late in the second period when MacKinnon drove toward the net while attempting to connect on a cross-crease pass. The Avalanche forward missed the deflection but continued his momentum toward the crease.

As MacKinnon approached the goal, Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse appeared to make contact from behind, pushing the Colorado star as he crashed into Ingram.

Officials ruled the play as goaltender interference, ejecting MacKinnon from the game. He was assessed a five-minute major penalty along with a 10-minute game misconduct. Despite the lengthy power play, Edmonton was unable to score.

Before leaving the game, MacKinnon logged one shot and accumulated 15 penalty minutes in 14:17 of ice time. Meanwhile, Ingram exited the contest after allowing two goals on 17 shots. He appeared to suffer a cut on his forehead during the collision, with visible blood on the ice. Backup goaltender Tristan Jarry took over for the remainder of the game.

The controversial play immediately sparked debate across the hockey world, with analysts and insiders offering differing perspectives on whether MacKinnon deserved the penalty.

NHL analyst Mark Rycroft argued that the contact was largely caused by Nurse. “This is the perfect angle. Mackinnon is angled away from Ingram. He’s one of the best skaters in the world. You don’t think he knows what to do. Garbage call all around. This should be no penalty. Nurse cause 100% of the contact,” Rycroft wrote.

Hockey analyst Pete Blackburn also suggested there may not have been malicious intent behind the collision. “That’s the most brutal goalie run I’ve seen in a bit but don’t think there was malicious intent from MacKinnon & he had some escapability taken away by Nurse. Pretty surprised they stuck with the major there.”

DNVR Avalanche podcast host Nathan Rudolph criticized the league’s handling of goalie-contact rulings. “The NHL does not have a clue what to do with any call involving a goalie. A complete failure by the league,” he said.

NHL insider Mark Spector focused on the severity of the collision itself. “That’s heavy, heavy contact, MacKinnon on Ingram,” Spector wrote.

After the game, Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar expressed frustration, saying, “They ref the way they want to ref… Sometimes they miss stuff, sometimes they don’t, and it’s just the way it goes sometimes.”

While there has been no official update on Ingram’s condition, the nature of the collision suggests he could enter concussion protocol. The Oilers continue with games in Dallas on Thursday and St. Louis on Friday.
