The Montreal Canadiens have moved into a strong position as the regular season enters a crucial phase. The team has picked up points with recent wins and remains in the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference.
With a demanding road trip ahead, management is now looking for ways to improve the roster. That brings trade discussions into focus as the deadline gets closer.
Canadiens Linked to Blake Coleman Despite Reported No-Trade List Concerns
The Canadiens are among the teams expected to explore additions before the March 6 trade deadline. They sit third in the Atlantic Division and have continued their advance after a 6-2 win over the Washington Capitals on Feb. 28. With a playoff spot within reach, the front office is evaluating options to address areas that require attention.
Blake Coleman has emerged as one of the top names in trade discussions. The Calgary Flames forward is in the fifth year of a six-year, $29.4 million contract that carries a $4.9 million cap hit. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2026–27 season.
Coleman brings experience, penalty-killing ability, and a physical style that can fit a playoff environment. He has recorded 21 points in 47 games this season after returning from an upper-body injury.

However, some factors could complicate a deal with Montreal. According to Sportsnet’s Eric Engels, the Canadiens may be included on Coleman’s modified no-trade list.
Engels wrote, “As far as an edgy winger is concerned, Calgary’s Blake Coleman, who makes $4.9 million per through 2027, is compelling. But some sources have indicated Montreal is among the 10 teams he’s listed on his modified no-trade clause, and two others have suggested his destination of preference is Dallas.”
This means any move would require Coleman’s approval.
On the other hand, if Engels’ report holds, the Dallas Stars could be a possible destination for Coleman. But for now, Coleman’s situation remains one of the most discussed ahead of the deadline, and he is ranked high on several trade boards.
The veteran forward has been open about the situation since returning from injury on Feb. 22. He said, “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t aware of everything and keeping up with it. It’s a lot of moving pieces at this stage of my life with family and kids. It’s not just me anymore.”
Coleman also mentioned that communication with general manager Craig Conroy has been clear, and both sides understand the situation.

There are also practical challenges for Calgary when it comes to making a deal. The team has only one salary retention slot left after earlier trades, which could limit options if they try to move more than one contract.
For Montreal, interest in Coleman shows a focus on adding depth and experience for the final regular-season push. The team has been strong offensively, but still looks to improve in defensive areas and on the penalty kill.
Whether a deal happens will depend on several factors, including Coleman’s willingness to approve a move and how the Flames handle their remaining trade flexibility.
