The Montreal Canadiens have lost their momentum after their Game 4 loss, despite having the chance to seize full control of their second-round matchup against the Buffalo Sabres. The night was less physical than Game 3, and it worked against the Canadiens, who lost the game 3-2.
One major difference was Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj’s ice time, which dropped to 3:46. This was a reduction of over three minutes of ice time from his series average, which came after his heated exchange with Buffalo defenseman Logan Stanley. The incident was caught on a live broadcast on a hot mic and has since spread across the NHL world.
Arber Xhekaj Blasts Logan Stanley During Heated Canadiens-Sabers Clash
Xhekaj was the player behind the viral moment during Montreal’s Game 3 win over Buffalo. The Canadiens defenseman was caught on a hot mic directing a brutal verbal shot at Sabres defenseman Stanley during a chaotic stretch of the game.
Xhekaj shouted, “You’re the f**king softest guy on your team! What do you bring? Where’s your toughness? Where’s your f***ing toughness?”
The exchange happened during an emotional contest that featured constant scrums, heavy hits, and 80 total penalty minutes. Montreal controlled that game with a 6-2 victory, but the tension between both teams carried into the next matchup.
The confrontation gained even more attention because Stanley was brought to Buffalo specifically to strengthen the team’s brute strength for the playoffs.
The 6-foot-7 defenseman arrived from the Winnipeg Jets before the trade deadline alongside Luke Schenn in a deal that sent Isak Rosen, Jacob Bryson, and draft picks the other way. Stanley has had the best offensive season of his NHL career, recording nine goals and 17 assists across 76 games.
Despite that progress, Xhekaj openly questioned Stanley’s physical presence during the series, and he was even scratched from Game 4. Meanwhile, the Canadiens blueliner has collected 4 penalty minutes and a $3,385.42 fine to boot for dropping Sabres forward Sam Carrick with a clean right-hand punch in Game 3. Xhekaj’s fine was the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.
Buffalo responded to the Game 3 collapse by making a lineup adjustment, as Sabres coach Lindy Ruff scratched Stanley and inserted veteran defenseman Luke Schenn into the lineup. The decision paid off as Buffalo earned the win to even the series at 2-2.
Montreal still received strong offensive efforts from Alex Newhook and Cole Caufield in the loss. However, Buffalo capitalized on special teams and received a solid effort from goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.
