NHL World Poke Holes In Mitch Love’s Statement As Fired Capitals Coach Breaks Silence On Investigation

While the NHL suspended Capitals assistant coach Mitchell Love over alleged misconduct, his contradictory statement has sparked fan backlash.

The NHL suspended former Washington Capitals assistant coach Mitchell Love for the remainder of the 2025-26 season following an investigation into alleged misconduct. The Capitals simultaneously terminated Love’s employment on Sunday.

While the league hasn’t publicly disclosed specific details about the investigation, Love issued a statement through his attorney denying the allegations. However, NHL fans have criticized what they perceive as contradictions in his response.

Why Are NHL Fans Criticizing Mitchell Love’s Statement About His Suspension?

According to Daily Faceoff, the NHL received correspondence in June containing allegations of domestic abuse against Love. The league launched an investigation while the Capitals placed him on team-imposed leave in September.

Insider Frank Seravalli first reported Love’s suspension Sunday. Following their investigation, the league reportedly found sufficient evidence to suspend Love through the end of the current season for alleged violations of league conduct policies.

The Capitals announced his termination via official team channels shortly after. Love responded through his attorney, expressing disagreement with the league’s decision while simultaneously accepting it.

“While I am disappointed by and disagree with the NHL’s decision, I respect the process and accept both the league’s findings and the Capitals’ decision,” the statement read.

“I will continue to openly cooperate throughout this process. That said, I fully deny the allegations against me and look forward to returning to the sport I love as soon as possible,” Love stated through attorney Josh Vlasto on Sunday evening.

Fans immediately questioned the apparent contradiction in Love’s statement. “So he accepts the Caps’ decision to fire him for something he fully denies happened?” one wrote.

Some supporters suggested legal action if Love maintains his innocence. “Sue the NHL & Caps for wrongful termination then. See how that goes for you,” one tweeted.

Others highlighted the logical inconsistency. “How does one accept the findings yet deny the allegations?” one posted. Additional fans expressed skepticism about Love’s denial.

“What a pos can not admit to what he did,” one user wrote. Another noted that, regardless of Love’s denials, public perception has already been established. “Poor guy doesn’t understand the internet has already cancelled him,” one commented.

Some fans theorized Love’s acceptance of the decisions stems from career considerations. “He knows they don’t want the heat that comes with the allegations,” one posted, suggesting Love doesn’t want to create additional controversy that could harm future employment prospects.

Before these allegations emerged, Love was considered a strong candidate for head coaching vacancies this summer. The Boston Bruins, Seattle Kraken, and Pittsburgh Penguins reportedly had interest in him for their openings.

None of those organizations has issued statements regarding Love’s suspension or the allegations against him.
