The San Jose Sharks made one of the biggest moves of the summer by bringing in Darnell Nurse, ending the defenseman’s lengthy run with the Edmonton Oilers.
The trade raised questions about what Nurse can bring to a rebuilding Sharks roster, but the discussion soon took another turn after General Manager Mike Grier explained why he believes the veteran will benefit from the move.
Mike Grier Faces Backlash Over Darnell Nurse-Mitch Marner Statement
The Sharks officially acquired Nurse on July 1, with San Jose taking on the remaining four years of his $9.25 million annual cap hit without any salary retention from Edmonton. In return, the Oilers received young defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin and prospect Zack Sharp, while creating significant salary cap flexibility to reshape their roster.
Speaking to reporters after completing the deal, Sharks general manager Grier said he believes leaving one of Canada’s most demanding hockey markets could allow Nurse to rediscover his game. To explain his thinking, he pointed to former Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner’s renaissance after leaving Toronto for Vegas last summer.
“You saw a little bit of that with Mitch Marner getting out of Toronto. Just to be able to breathe, play hockey. Sometimes you kind of feel like the weight of the world’s on your shoulders to perform, and if you lose, it’s your fault, if you win, no one really says anything.
“That’s just the life of a player in a big, big Canadian market, and if you’re a marquee player there, that always adds extra pressure to it. We think him coming here and getting out of that environment will only help his game,” Grier said.
Grier’s comments showed the organization’s belief that Nurse can benefit from a fresh environment after spending 12 seasons under constant scrutiny in Edmonton.
The veteran defenseman routinely faced criticism over his $9.25 million cap hit, making him one of the Oilers’ most heavily discussed players during both regular-season and playoff runs.
The comparison, however, immediately became a flashpoint on X.
NHL analyst Mike Bartner questioned the reasoning behind the remarks, posting, “Playing the Marner card to defend this move mah gawd.” His reaction suggested the comparison overshadowed the trade itself.
Others focused on the financial commitment San Jose made. NHL analyst Nathan Graviteh wrote, “I don’t know man I’m not sure I love a GM defending a move by basically saying: ‘Well he was definitely not good before, but here, maybe he can be!!!’ When you’re taking on 9M+ for the next 4 seasons.” His criticism centered on the risk of committing to Nurse’s contract while hoping a change of scenery sparks improvement.
NHL analyst Jeff Veillette posted, “Generational levels of Everything Is The Leafs here.”
Edna Garrett also pushed back on Grier’s explanation, writing, “LOL more of this [expletive]. So scary being in a market where they love hockey.”

Whether Grier’s prediction proves correct will unfold over the coming seasons. For now, though, his attempt to explain why the Sharks believe Nurse can thrive in San Jose has generated almost as much discussion as the blockbuster trade itself.
