Mitch Marner Breaks Silence on Maple Leafs Fans’ ‘Unacceptable’ Threats, Opens Up on Threats to His Family’s Safety

After years of pressure and harassment in Toronto, Mitch Marner admits his family’s safety was a factor in leaving the Maple Leafs for the Golden Knights.

The death threats started after another playoff disappointment, but this time they crossed a line Mitch Marner couldn’t ignore. When strangers showed up knowing his home address and his family needed round-the-clock security, the Toronto Maple Leafs star realized something had to change. With a newborn son at home, the decision that had been brewing for months suddenly became crystal clear.

Did Threats Toward His Family Push Mitch Marner Out of Toronto?

Marner, who signed with the Vegas Golden Knights in July through a sign-and-trade deal, said the situation left him shaken. “When your family’s safety comes into question, especially when you have a new son, I don’t think that’s acceptable,” he explained to TSN’s Mark Masters.

The 28-year-old forward revealed how his home address was reportedly shared online after the Leafs’ playoff elimination, forcing his family to bring in full-time security. That protection stayed in place for two weeks following the postseason to ensure no one acted on the threats.

This wasn’t Marner’s first experience with harassment in Toronto. Over the years, his family endured harassment ranging from verbal abuse in public to objects reportedly being thrown onto their property. His agent Darren Ferris has also confirmed that death threats were directed at Marner in past seasons.

While Marner acknowledged Toronto is a passionate market, he noted that the intensity sometimes crossed a line. The longtime Maple Leaf admitted the negative voices often drowned out the positive ones.

“For all the negative comments out there, you know there’s so many love comments,” Marner said. “The problem is that the love comments don’t come out as much as the hatred ones, and that’s just the way life goes, and that’s the way the social media has turned into in a way.”

Why Mitch Marner Left Toronto for Vegas

Beyond the security concerns, Marner’s decision to leave Toronto centered on finding stability for his growing family. He and his wife recently welcomed their first child, and the environment in Toronto was becoming increasingly difficult to navigate.

“The market was tough to all of us at times, and we needed to lean on each other,” he said. “It was tough calling those guys and letting them know what was going to happen. Just the reaction out of both sides was, you know, it sucked, but that’s the way this sport goes sometimes.”

The Vegas Golden Knights offered Marner an eight-year, $96 million deal and, perhaps more importantly, a chance to play in a less intense market. He expects to focus more on hockey than off-ice distractions in Las Vegas.

However, leaving Toronto meant breaking ties with teammates who had become like family. Marner described calling Auston Matthews to break the news as one of the hardest moments of his career. Drafted a year apart, the two entered the NHL together and built a close bond on and off the ice.

“That phone call to him was pretty tough. It was pretty emotional,” Marner admitted.

Despite the difficult ending, Marner leaves behind a strong legacy in Toronto. Drafted fourth overall in 2015, he became one of the Leafs’ most consistent point producers, recording over 82 points on average per season. He delivered 63 points in the playoffs in 70 games, even if team results often fell short of expectations.

The winger emphasized his gratitude for his time wearing the blue and white. “I’m forever grateful to be a Maple Leaf and wear that crest on my chest for nine years,” Marner said. “I tried to give everything I had for those nine years and, you know, it sucks that we weren’t able to get it done.”

Now with the Golden Knights, Marner looks ahead to a fresh start in a new environment. His first return to Toronto is set for January 23, though it will come on the second night of a back-to-back. The reception he receives from the fans who once threatened his family remains to be seen.
