‘Backs Are Against The Wall’ — Mikko Rantanen Makes Feelings Crystal Clear With Dallas Stars in Do-Or-Die Mode Vs. Minnesota

Mikko Rantanen has raised the urgency level as the Dallas Stars move into a do-or-die situation against the Minnesota Wild. After watching his team struggle to break through Minnesota’s goaltending despite generating chances, the Stars forward stressed the need to address their lack of five-on-five scoring.

Dallas now finds itself in a difficult spot, with its structure under pressure due to limited finishing ability. With the series shifting, the spotlight turns to how the group handles this moment.

Mikko Rantanen Outlines Urgency and Execution Gaps As Stars Face Elimination vs. Wild

Rantanen addressed the situation directly after Dallas fell behind 3-2 in the series following a 4-2 loss in Game 5. The winger pointed to urgency and mindset as the starting point, saying, “It’s just mental toughness from now on. Your backs are against the wall, so it’s pretty simple.”

His comments focused on mindset over tactics as the team prepares for a must-win game on the road. Rantanen added, “It’s leave it all out there in Minnesota in the next game and see where it takes us. That’s all we can do and get home for Game 7. That’s our plan.”

Dallas struggled to generate offense at five-on-five. The team has gone over 200 minutes without a goal in that situation, which has limited its ability to sustain pressure. While Jason Robertson (5 goals) has continued to produce, and Matt Duchene leads the group in points (8), the overall scoring balance has not been even keel.

Rantanen also highlighted a technical issue that has affected their attack. He explained, “Probably there’s some quicker puck movement… if you move it quick and shoot it quick, then it’s harder to block.” His point addressed how delayed decisions have allowed defenders to close lanes and block attempts before they reach the net.

“Now we’re maybe getting the puck and trying to find something else… maybe we’ve got to just — if we’ve got a puck high, first thing is find a lane to the net.”

This clearly shows how hesitation has reduced shot volume and limited second-chance opportunities in high-danger areas. Minnesota has taken advantage of those gaps by capitalizing on turnovers and controlling key moments through special teams. Kirill Kaprizov drove their offense in Game 5, while Dallas failed to match that efficiency despite generating zone time.

Rantanen’s own production has come primarily on the power play, with his even-strength impact still developing after returning from injury late in the season. That split reflects a broader team issue.

Defensively, Dallas has not been overwhelmed, but small errors have snatched their momentum. Shot selection and puck management remain central concerns as they prepare for Game 6.

With elimination now a factor, the Stars need quicker decisions, cleaner execution, and stronger support scoring. Dallas will need to see the version of Rantanen that grabbed the playoffs by the horns last season to stand any chance against a rampaging Minnesota Wild.
