Matvei Michkov isn’t mincing words about what he wants next season. After a standout rookie year, the Philadelphia Flyers forward is already looking ahead, and he’s made it clear what he expects from new head coach Rick Tocchet.
Michkov’s message is simple: give him freedom, and he’ll deliver.
Matvei Michkov Eyes Growth Under Rick Tocchet
“I just hope I’ll have freedom on the ice. When I feel limited, I start focusing on the wrong things,” Michkov told RG Media in a recent interview. “That’s when I play my best.”
The 20-year-old Russian phenom wrapped up his debut NHL season with 60 points (26 goals, 34 assists) in 82 games. His performance put him among the league’s top rookies and was a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing Flyers season.
Still, Michkov isn’t satisfied.
“I think it was a great season,” he said. “But I really want our team to make the playoffs every year and fight for the Stanley Cup.”
Michkov stressed that individual stats don’t matter much to him if the team falls short. He’d gladly take fewer goals if it meant postseason hockey in Philadelphia.
The Flyers officially hired Tocchet as their 25th head coach after parting ways with John Tortorella and a brief interim stint by Brad Shaw. For Michkov, it’s his third coach in two seasons, but he’s embracing the reset.
“A new coach always means a fresh start. I don’t know him personally, so I can’t say much yet,” said Michkov. “The main thing is that the team improves and makes the playoffs.”
He hopes Tocchet will give him the space to thrive. Michkov’s game relies on creativity and confidence, and he flourishes when he’s not overly constrained by structure.
Still, he’s not demanding special treatment. “I’ll do whatever the coach says,” Michkov clarified. “If I have fewer points but the team makes the playoffs, I’ll take that over scoring more and missing out. I’m tired of losing. I want to win.”
Michkov Reflects on Rookie Season, Bond with Tortorella
Before Tocchet, John Tortorella helped guide Michkov through his rookie season. Known for his no-nonsense style, Tortorella earned Michkov’s respect with his honesty and direct approach.
“For my first NHL season, Tortorella was probably the best coach I could’ve had. From day one, he explained everything clearly and was always honest with me,” Michkov said. “Sure, sometimes we disagreed or even argued — that’s normal. But we always talked things out face to face. We had a great relationship, and I’m very grateful for what he taught me.”
The two reportedly had weekly one-on-ones, where hockey strategy often became life advice. Michkov valued those sessions, calling them helpful in adjusting to life in the NHL.
Michkov’s resume speaks for itself. He led all NHL rookies in goals and was tied for the most points among rookie forwards. He made history by becoming only the fourth teenager to score three overtime goals in a season, joining the ranks of legends like Sidney Crosby.
That kind of performance earned him October’s NHL Rookie of the Month and praise from Flyers leadership. General Manager Danny Brière highlighted Michkov’s detailed postseason debrief, calling it rare for a 20-year-old. Teammate Travis Konecny said Michkov believes he can be the NHL’s best, and might be right.
For now, though, the focus is clear: playoffs. A new coach is in. A young star is ready. And Matvei Michkov wants to win, starting now.

Go Flyers!!!!!
