‘Going Home Empty-Handed Sucks’ — Matthew Tkachuk Licking His Wounds as Team USA Gets Demolished 4-0

Team USA carried strong momentum into the knockout round after two straight wins, believing their late surge could finally carry them past Canada. Instead, they ran into a Canadian team that set the tempo early and never loosened its grip, as the Americans struggled to match the structure in a 4-0 quarterfinal loss in Switzerland.

The disappointment carried straight into the postgame media room, where one of Team USA’s key leaders, Matthew Tkachuk, openly addressed where the game shifted and what ultimately went wrong after Canada shut the door on the American run at the 2026 IIHF World Championship.

Matthew Tkachuk Admits Team Canada Controlled the Quarterfinals As USA Exits 2026 IIHF Worlds

Tkachuk did not hide his frustration after Team USA was shut out by Canada. Speaking with TSN, the Florida Panthers forward pointed directly to Canada’s goaltending and the momentum swing created during the first period as the difference.

“Probably their goalie and then the penalty on Sid,” Tkachuk said. “We didn’t think it was a penalty, and then they got a little bit of momentum from that. I think a 0-0 game going into the second is a lot different.”

Canada eventually capitalized late in the opening period when Macklin Celebrini buried a power-play goal after sustained pressure. From there, Team USA spent most of the night chasing the game as Canada continued controlling possession and outshooting the Americans.

Tkachuk still acknowledged the overall difference between the two teams despite questioning the early sequence that shifted momentum. “They were definitely the better team today for most of it,” he admitted. “Their goalie made some incredible saves. They ultimately were better for most of the game, so they deserved to win.”

The Americans generated a few strong stretches during the second and third periods, but Canadian goaltender Jet Greaves consistently shut the door. Canada later sealed the win with empty-net goals from Connor Brown and Sidney Crosby.

For Tkachuk, the loss carried extra frustration because he joined the tournament hoping to complete another major accomplishment in an already decorated stretch of his career. After helping the Panthers win back-to-back Stanley Cups and earning Olympic gold earlier in 2026, he was chasing a chance to join the Triple Gold Club.

Instead, the tournament ended in the quarterfinals after Team USA finished group play with a 3-3 record and barely reached the knockout stage. Tkachuk still produced offensively after arriving late, posting seven points in five games and helping stabilize a younger American roster.

Despite the painful ending, he spoke positively about the group and the overall experience in Switzerland. “I came here to win, and going home empty-handed sucks,” Tkachuk said. “But I will remember the experience with the boys. It was such a fun group.”

He also praised the future of USA Hockey, highlighting the impact of several young players throughout the tournament. Still, Tkachuk made it clear that this tournament was never part of his ideal hockey calendar.

“I don’t ever want to be back in this tournament,” he said. “I want to be playing in the playoffs.”
