‘I Can See How It Gets Annoying’ — Matthew Tkachuk Empathizes With Mitch Marner’s Battles With Toronto Media

The end of the Mitch Marner era in Toronto is already being viewed as one of the defining moments in recent Maple Leafs history. After years of elite production mixed with playoff disappointment and nonstop scrutiny, Marner finally moved on from the only NHL team he had ever known.

Now, fellow NHL star Matthew Tkachuk is speaking openly about the pressure Marner dealt with while playing under the bright lights in Toronto.

Matthew Tkachuk Makes Feelings Clear on Toronto Media’s Treatment of Mitch Marner

Even though Marner led the Leafs in postseason scoring during his tenure with 63 points in 70 playoff games, he often became the main target for criticism from both fans and media whenever the team fell short.

Following another second-round elimination in 2025 (a seven-game loss to the Florida Panthers), Marner decided against signing an extension with Toronto, so the Leafs dealt him to the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade deal.

Marner later revealed that concerns over his family’s safety and the constant harassment during his time in Toronto heavily influenced his decision to leave.

Speaking on the Wingmen podcast, Tkachuk explained just how relentless the Toronto media environment can feel during a playoff series.

“Say you play on a Monday and then you don’t play again Wednesday. You’re answering questions Monday night. Say it’s a loss too for them. You’re answering questions about that on Monday.

You have to come to the rink Tuesday, you’re answering questions about Monday. Still, you come to the rink Wednesday… it’s a new day and you’re answering questions about Monday,” Tkachuk pointed out.

“The only time you’re moving on is after that next game. So, it is kind of tough. I could see how it would get like a little bit annoying,” he added.

Tkachuk’s comments offered rare public empathy toward what Marner endured during his time in Toronto.

Since joining Vegas, Marner has thrived in a much different environment. He finished the 2025–26 regular season with 80 points and currently leads the 2026 playoffs with 16 points in 10 games, finally shedding the “playoff ghost” reputation that followed him throughout his Toronto tenure.

Meanwhile, things unraveled quickly for Toronto after his departure. Without Marner’s elite two-way playmaking and transition game, the flaws in the Leafs’ roster became impossible to ignore. The team stumbled to a disappointing 32-36-14 record in 2025-26, falling near the bottom of the standings only one year after being viewed as a contender.
