The pressure around Team USA kept building during the 2026 IIHF Men’s World Championship as the Americans struggled to find their rhythm against top-tier opponents.
Their quarterfinal showdown with Team Canada already carried heavyweight energy, fueled by a rivalry, physical play, and months of tension involving several U.S. stars heading into the tournament.
During the game, one sequence involving Matthew Tkachuk completely stole the spotlight. As Canada tightened its grip on the game and frustration mounted for Team USA, social media turned one awkward moment into the night’s biggest storyline.
Matthew Tkachuk Gets Called Out by Referee During Team USA’s Shutout Loss to Canada
Tkachuk drew heavy criticism online after an on-ice official called him out for embellishment during Team USA’s 4-0 quarterfinal loss to Team Canada in Switzerland.
During the game, Tkachuk attempted to draw a tripping penalty after going down easily against a Canadian skater. Rather than immediately assessing a diving minor, the IIHF referee addressed him directly on the ice in a moment clearly picked up by the broadcast mics.
“Matt, Matt! No! You’re better than this, you’re better than this!” the referee told Tkachuk during the sequence.
The clip spread rapidly across X, with many hockey fans clowning the Florida Panthers forward for the obvious attempt to sell the call. The reaction became even louder because of the long-running rivalry narrative surrounding Matthew and Brady Tkachuk against Team Canada in recent international tournaments.
As the embellishment clip circulated online, several NHL personalities joined the conversation with blunt reactions.
NHL analyst JD Young reposted the video on X and sarcastically wrote, “is he?”
Another reaction came from NHL analyst Chris McCluskey, who kept it simple while responding to the viral moment by posting, “Yikes.”
The criticism continued building as sports media personality Gabriel Morency reacted strongly to the referee’s comment, posting, “#IIHF REF CALLING Tkachuck out. Love it.”
Meanwhile, broadcaster Shaye Ganam took a direct shot at Tkachuk while referencing the referee’s statement, writing, “He is not better than this.”
The timing also worked against Team USA. Canada completely controlled the game’s biggest moments and eliminated the defending champions with a dominant defensive performance. While the Americans finished with a 34-31 edge in shots, Canadian goaltender Jet Greaves stopped every opportunity thrown his way.
Canada gained early control after U.S. defenseman Ryan Lindgren received a 5-minute major and game misconduct for a high hit on Evan Bouchard. During that power play, Macklin Celebrini opened the scoring and shifted momentum firmly toward Canada. Dylan Holloway later added another goal before Connor Brown and Sidney Crosby sealed the victory with empty-net goals late in the third period.
