The rivalry between Matthew Tkachuk and Leon Draisaitl reached another level on Sunday, as Team USA rolled past Germany 5-1 in its final Group C game at the Winter Olympics.
While the Americans controlled the scoreboard, much of the buzz centered on a heated exchange between the two NHL stars, one that quickly made waves across the hockey world.
Reaction to Matthew Tkachuk’s Jab at Draisaitl
Tasked with containing Germany’s top line, Tkachuk and his unit made life difficult for Draisaitl throughout the night, holding him off the scoresheet. But it wasn’t just the defensive effort that grabbed attention.
As the teams headed back to their benches during a stoppage, Tkachuk was caught on a hot mic delivering a sharp line toward the German captain. “Always the bridesmaid, eh Leon? Always the bridesmaid, never the bride,” Matthew said. His brother, Brady Tkachuk, could be seen nearby, listening in as the comment landed.
Draisaitl laughed it off at the remark. Later in the game, he skated toward Tkachuk as if to square up. But Tkachuk didn’t engage. And, Draisaitl simply laughed in his face before skating away.
Now, this clip was circulating across social media, sparking strong reactions from fans and analysts alike.
The tension between the two goes well beyond international play. Draisaitl’s Edmonton Oilers have fallen to Tkachuk’s Florida Panthers in each of the past two Stanley Cup Finals, adding extra edge to every meeting between them.
Top Tier Hockey reacted on X, criticizing Tkachuk and calling the comment ironic. The post argued, “Was a sidekick to Gaudreau in Calgary. Left to FLA because Leon destroyed him with one leg. Is arguably the 5th option on Florida. Worst Tkachuk in the family. Makes less money than Draisaitl. Forever a turtle (emoji).”
Sports analyst Morgan Laidler didn’t hold back either, writing, “Matthew Tkachuk is the most unlikable player in the league.” Laidler paired the comment with a clip from a recent NHL game showing Tkachuk elbowing Tampa Bay Lightning star Nikita Kucherov away from the puck.
Veteran sports columnist Helene Elliott also chimed in, suggesting, “Memo to NBC: there are other players on the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team worth mentioning and profiling besides Matthew and Brady Tkachuk.”
Fans joined the debate, with one pointing to playoff production to compare the two stars. The fan wrote, “Career playoff stats: Leon Draisaitl – 141 pts in 96 GP. Matthew Tkachuk – 84 pts in 94 GP. One drives the bus. One rides it.”

Love him or hate him, Tkachuk has once again found himself at the center of the hockey conversation. And with the knockout stage looming, there’s little doubt that if these two cross paths again, the intensity and the chirps won’t be going anywhere.
