Islanders Sensation Matthew Schaefer Responds to Oilers’ Connor McDavid Claiming He Has It Easy

Islanders rookie Matthew Schaefer responds to Connor McDavid’s claim that he has it easy while excelling in his first NHL season.

Breaking into the NHL is a big challenge, especially for a young defenseman facing established players every night. Still, Matthew Schaefer has stood out for the New York Islanders as the team relies on both experienced players and talented rookies.

After a 1-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers, Schaefer’s play drew attention, and he addressed a question on one of the league’s top stars’ claims.

How Did Islanders Matthew Schaefer Respond to Connor McDavid’s Rookie Challenge?

Schaefer, 18, was the first overall pick by the Islanders in 2025 and has handled the jump to the NHL well. After the Islanders’ tight win against Edmonton on Thursday, where Ilya Sorokin stopped 35 shots for a shutout, Schaefer responded to Connor McDavid’s claim that breaking in as a rookie defenseman is a lot harder today than his rookie year.

“He’s probably the best player in the world, if not one of the best. So, he’s fun to watch. It’s both ways. He adapted super quick, so it was definitely easy for him. I mean, he probably, you know, started to learn a lot of things from all the older guys, and that’s what I try to do. But you just gotta enjoy it, and I’m just trying to learn as much as I can, so then I can be the best version of myself,” Schaefer said, showing respect for McDavid while emphasizing his own effort.

McDavid has praised Schaefer on multiple occasions, calling him “a special player” and noting how difficult it is for an 18-year-old defenseman to manage all the responsibilities in the NHL. “It’s a tough league to come into [as an 18-year-old], no matter the position, but certainly a defenseman. You’re asked to do a lot of different things. You’re asked to be responsible to break pucks out against a heavy forecheck against big men, and he’s doing great,” McDavid said.

McDavid also said earlier in the season, “First off, just a great kid. He’s got a great personality, brings a lot of energy, and as a player, obviously seems like he’s off to a great start himself.”

Schaefer has delivered strong numbers in his first NHL season, with 12 goals and 17 assists in 47 games. He plays confidently, joins the rush, moves the puck well, and stays calm under pressure in his own zone. His plus-nine rating shows consistent two-way play, and he is trusted with heavy minutes in key situations.

The Islanders have leaned on his performance as they build momentum, including their win over Edmonton, where the team stayed patient and focused despite limited offense.

Meanwhile, Connor McDavid, 29, continues to lead the Oilers with speed, control, and playmaking. He has 82 points this season, including 30 goals and 52 assists, while driving the power play and creating chances for his teammates. His 20-point streak was halted by the Islanders’ defensive effort, including Schaefer’s role, making the rookie look more impressive.

Looking ahead, the Islanders face the Calgary Flames on Jan. 17 in Calgary. Schaefer’s growing confidence and skill will be key as the team relies on solid defense and quick transition. They will face a Flames squad trying hard to stay in playoff contention.
