‘Heads Held High’ — Canadian PM Mark Carney Gives Montreal Canadiens Their Due

After entering the playoffs as one of the NHL’s youngest teams, the Montreal Canadiens battled through back-to-back seven-game series to reach the Eastern Conference Final. Their postseason run ended against the Carolina Hurricanes, but the result did little to overshadow the progress the organization made throughout the year.

Following Montreal’s elimination, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney joined those applauding the Canadiens’ effort, offering praise for a team that exceeded expectations and gave its fans plenty of reasons to believe in the future.

Carney was among those who acknowledged Montreal’s postseason effort after the Canadiens were eliminated by the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final.

Shortly after the 6-1 defeat, Carney shared a message on X directed at the team and its fan base, writing, “Heads held high, Habs. A hard fought series.”

The message arrived after Carolina completed four straight victories following Montreal’s Game 1 win.

The Hurricanes controlled much of the series with their aggressive forecheck and puck possession, eventually outgunning the Canadiens 167-89 across the five games. Carolina’s dominance was especially evident in the deciding matchup, where it built a 5-0 lead before Cole Caufield scored Montreal’s lone goal on a third-period power play.

Despite the lopsided ending, the Canadiens accomplished far more than many expected entering the playoffs. Montreal first eliminated the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games, including a critical Game 7 road victory.

The team then survived another seven-game battle against the Buffalo Sabres, advancing on a dramatic overtime win to reach the conference final.

Much of that success came from a young core that gained valuable postseason experience under head coach Martin St. Louis.

Players such as Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovsky, Lane Hutson, and Ivan Demidov were thrust into major roles throughout the run. Goaltender Jakub Dobes also emerged as an important player, helping Montreal navigate two grueling rounds before eventually running into a rested Carolina squad.

Following the elimination, St. Louis focused less on the result and more on what his group could take from the experience. Reflecting on the season, he said, “I feel like it’s something we’ve built, and we keep growing. We’re going to learn a lot through this process and failing at advancing. You learn way more through failures. (But) there’s a lot of wins in what we did this year. It’s going to help us keep progressing.”

This perspective reflects why Carney’s message resonated with many Canadiens supporters. While the loss officially ended Canada’s hopes of ending its Stanley Cup drought this season, Montreal’s postseason was filled with meaningful milestones.

The final score in Game 5 was disappointing, but it did not define the Canadiens’ season. Judging by the reaction from Canada’s prime minister and the optimism within the organization, Montreal’s playoff run may ultimately be remembered as the beginning of something larger rather than the end of a promising year.
