Maple Leafs HC Delivers Bad News on Anthony Stolarz’s Injury

Maple Leafs head coach delivers tough update on Anthony Stolarz’s injury, leaving fans concerned about his return timeline.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have struggled this season. Despite picking up some early victories, including one over rivals Montreal, the franchise has suffered from inconsistent play throughout the campaign. The struggles have cost them multiple winnable games.

However, the team suffered another major blow to its roster as its primary goaltender, Anthony Stolarz, was recently injured. While initially thought to be a routine injury, a recent update from head coach Craig Berube suggests the situation is worse than initially anticipated.

How Will Anthony Stolarz’s Injury Impact the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Goaltending?

Toronto has already been struggling without Joseph Woll between the pipes. While Stolarz appeared to be a capable replacement for the 1A netminder, the numbers have not supported that optimism. His injury in early November left the Maple Leafs searching for answers in goal.

Initially, the organization believed Stolarz would miss minimal time. The goaltender suffered the injury during Toronto’s loss to Columbus on November 8. The franchise described it as a lower-body injury without providing specific details about the severity.

However, Berube delivered concerning news on Tuesday when addressing Stolarz’s status. The head coach revealed the injury is more serious than initially diagnosed.

“Obviously, worse than we thought. He’s not ready to get on the ice yet and do the things that he needs to. Hopefully, soon, I don’t have a timetable,” Berube said. The coach’s comments indicate Stolarz has not progressed as quickly as the medical staff anticipated.

The goaltender remains unable to participate in on-ice activities, suggesting the injury requires more recovery time than a routine day-to-day issue. Berube ruled out the injury, representing a setback from the original diagnosis.

“We weren’t sure at the time about the seriousness of it,” he explained, clarifying that the organization simply underestimated the severity initially, rather than Stolarz suffering a complication during recovery. The prolonged absence creates significant problems for Toronto’s goaltending depth.

Dennis Hildeby has been forced into extended duty as the backup while Cayden Primeau was signed to provide additional depth. Neither represents an ideal solution for a franchise hoping to compete for a playoff spot.

Stolarz signed a two-year contract extension worth $5 million during the offseason. The deal reflected Toronto’s confidence in him as a reliable tandem option alongside Woll. But his .889 save percentage through eight games before the injury raised concerns about his performance.

The Maple Leafs sit at 9-9-2 through 20 games and have allowed the second-most goals in the NHL. Goaltending inconsistency has been a primary factor in their struggles. Without a clear timeline for Stolarz’s return, Toronto must navigate a difficult schedule while relying on unproven netminders to keep them competitive.
