Insider Reveals Why Maple Leafs Fell Short in Rasmus Andersson Trade Sweepstakes

Maple Leafs miss out on Rasmus Andersson as Vegas secures the defenseman, highlighting challenges of competing for top NHL talent.

The January trades in the NHL always come with mixed feelings for different teams, and the latest move involving Rasmus Andersson showed just how challenging it can be to land top talent. His decision to go to the Vegas Golden Knights surprised many, including Toronto fans who had hoped to add him to their roster.

The trade showed not only Andersson’s value but also the appeal of playing in Vegas. Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs struggled to compete in the final days of negotiations.

Why Toronto Fell Short in Rasmus Andersson Trade to Vegas Golden Knights?

Andersson was traded from Calgary to the Vegas Golden Knights in a deal that included Zach Whitecloud, prospect Abram Wiebe, and two conditional draft picks. Despite Toronto’s efforts, Andersson, 29, chose Vegas, and Elliotte Friedman explained the reasoning on the “32 Thoughts” podcast.

“Vegas is a destination. Players wanna play there. It’s a great place to live, raise a family. Great weather. The team’s always good. They’re aggressive. They’ve got great players locked in for a long time. No-tax state. They’re a hot franchise in terms of guys wanting to go there. It might just be that simple,” Friedman said.

He added that while Toronto pushed, the final offer could not match what Vegas was willing to provide, leaving the Leafs on the outside.

“At the end of the day, Andersson decided that’s where I want to go. And it flipped everything on its head. Boston was out. Vegas was still in; they were willing to do things. Toronto, I think, pushed, but you look at the final offer. I don’t think they could’ve beaten that. I think Dallas got a little more into it towards the end, but I don’t think there was any point in time where Dallas was a favorite. They got into it a bit at the end, but I’m not sure they could’ve beaten that,” Friedman added.

Andersson, drafted 53rd overall by Calgary in 2015, has developed into a reliable two-way defenseman who moves the puck well and handles tough matchups. This season, he has produced 10 goals and 20 assists for 30 points in 48 games, maintaining a plus-three rating while consistently performing in both wins and losses.

Flames general manager Craig Conroy confirmed the complexity of the negotiations and the importance of draft picks in the deal. “In deals like this, when you have a player of Rasmus’ caliber, it really has to have a first-round pick in it,” Conroy said. He noted that Vegas was willing to complete the trade without an extension, which changed the approach late in the talks, allowing them to secure Andersson even without a contract guarantee.

The Golden Knights, currently leading the Pacific Division, add Andersson to a team that already combines skill and depth. Vegas averages 3.38 goals per game, led by Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner, while allowing just under three goals per contest. Andersson strengthens a team with a winning culture, adding a reliable, experienced defenseman as they push toward the postseason.

Toronto, meanwhile, continues its campaign in 2026 with a 24-16-8 record, showing offensive firepower but also defensive gaps. Auston Matthews continues to lead the team, while William Nylander provides offensive depth, but their power-play struggles and goals against remain challenges.
