The Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves heading into the offseason earlier than expected after falling out of the playoff race.
With only a few games left and the team near the bottom of the Atlantic Division, the focus has quickly turned to possible coaching changes, including questions about the future of head coach Craig Berube.
Calls Grow for a Maple Leafs Coaching Change
Toronto has already begun reshaping its leadership structure. The organization parted ways with general manager Brad Treliving last week.
And Keith Pelley, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, indicated the team is leaning toward a retool rather than a full rebuild. That approach suggests management believes the core roster can still compete with the right adjustments.
NHL insider Jeff Marek argued that the biggest change should come behind the bench. “Let’s just be blunt. Like, this is a team that needs a coach that’s more creative. That’s why I don’t I don’t necessarily think that you need to go in there and tear everything down at all. Give this team a chance with a creative coach,” Marek said.
Marek emphasized that while Berube was brought in to instill structure and accountability, the roster may now require a different voice capable of maximizing skill and creativity.
Marek also pushed back against the idea of tearing everything down. Instead, he believes Toronto should first try a coaching change before considering drastic roster moves involving star players. “I still think you give this team a shot with a coach that can think creatively and not just traditionally,” he added.

In his view, a creative system could unlock more from the current lineup without forcing a rebuild.
NHL analyst David Cranstoun agreed and pointed to a specific option, former Edmonton Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft. Woodcroft guided Edmonton from February 2022 to November 2023 and is currently working as an assistant with the Anaheim Ducks. Known for his modern systems and strong communication with players, he could be an appealing choice for a team looking to add creativity.
Jeff Marek backed the idea, saying, “Would be one of my choices, yes.” The exchange underscores how quickly the conversation around Toronto has shifted from roster changes to coaching philosophy.
With the season winding down, the Maple Leafs’ offseason decisions could shape the franchise’s trajectory for years to come.
For now, Toronto turns its attention to its next game against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday, while speculation around the bench continues to build.
