Jason Robertson has landed at the center of swirling trade rumors following the Dallas Stars’ latest playoff exit. A cryptic post from NHL insider Kevin Weekes only added fuel to the speculation.

The timing of the post has raised eyebrows. So far, there has been no official word from the Stars. But the team’s tight cap situation and early exits in back-to-back Western Conference Finals have people asking serious questions.
At just 25, Robertson is one of the Stars’ biggest offensive weapons. He’s coming off another strong year and has one season remaining on a team-friendly $7.75 million contract. Still under team control until 2026, Robertson has been a model of consistency, not missing a game in the past three seasons and logging over 80 points in consecutive years.
So why would the Stars consider moving him?
It comes down to money and timing. Dallas enters the offseason with less than $5 million in cap space for 2025-26 and 16 roster players already under contract. With veterans like Jamie Benn, Matt Duchene, and Evgenii Dadonov approaching free agency, and young talent Thomas Harley due for a raise, something has to give.
Reports from Jeff Marek and Lia Assimakopoulos suggest Robertson could be a trade chip to free up space and replenish draft capital. The Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks have reportedly been floated as potential suitors. Marek even hinted that Toronto’s Mitch Marner, a pending UFA, could be on the Stars’ radar if space is cleared.
Would Trading Jason Robertson Be Worth the Risk?
Robertson’s potential departure would be a blockbuster move. But it would also be risky. Trading away a young, high-scoring winger under team control could backfire unless the return is overwhelming.
There’s a case to be made, though. His role may have shifted following the addition of Mikko Rantanen, and if Dallas wants to stay competitive while rebalancing the roster, moving Robertson for picks, prospects, or affordable depth could help reset their path forward.
It’s still unclear how serious this speculation is. The Stars have not commented, and Robertson remains under contract. However, when respected insiders start hinting at big changes, it’s rarely without reason.
As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on the Stars to see if they’re truly willing to explore moving one of their cornerstone players. For now, it’s only speculation, but it’s speculation with a growing sense of weight.
