Montreal Canadiens Goalie Jacob Fowler Receives His Biggest Endorsement Yet from Franchise Legend

Jacob Fowler receives a major endorsement from Montreal Canadiens legend Carey Price, strengthening hopes for his NHL future.

The Montreal Canadiens may have found their goaltender of the future, and the latest praise is coming from one of the franchise’s most respected legends. Rookie netminder Jacob Fowler has received a strong endorsement, adding even more excitement around the young goalie’s first NHL season.

Why Carey Price Approves of Rising Goalie Jacob Fowler

Fowler has appeared in 13 games so far, posting a 6-5-2 record along with a 2.72 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage. While those numbers show a solid start, the confidence from Canadiens legend Carey Price may be even more meaningful.

Price, who remains unofficially retired due to a chronic knee injury, made the comments during an appearance on the “Never Offside Podcast” with Julie Petry and Cat Toffoli. When asked if any current goalie reminded him of himself, Price pointed directly to Fowler.

“Yeah, Jakub Fowler,” Price said. “Like when I watch him playing, he reminds a lot of me when I was his age.”

Price also revealed he has spoken with Fowler and offered support as the rookie continues his development.

“Yeah, I talked to their goalies little bit, I talked to Jacob a couple of times, I don’t want to like, I’m not trying to get into his head or anything, you know, I gave him my number and if he ever has any questions about anything, I’m always open to help out anyway I can. But he looks like doing just fine to me.”

Beyond Fowler, Price shared several other lighthearted insights during the interview. He named Marc-André Fleury as the funniest goalie to play against and mentioned that he once copied Fleury’s shootout save pose.

When asked which player was toughest to read, Price pointed to Alexander Ovechkin for his ability to fire shots unpredictably. He also called P.K. Subban the best class clown among teammates.

Price has not played since April 29, 2022, and has not officially filed retirement papers as he continues to fulfill the terms of the eight-year, $84 million contract he signed with Montreal in 2017. He is currently in the final year of that deal.

In September 2025, the Canadiens traded Price’s contract and a 2026 fifth-round pick to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defensive prospect Gannon Laroque. The move was primarily a cap-related transaction, and Price is not expected to play.

For Fowler, however, the endorsement from one of the greatest goaltenders in Canadiens history stands out. Receiving praise from Price only strengthens the belief that Montreal may have its next long-term solution in the net.
