Jack Hughes Addresses NJ Devils’ Failed Bid To Get Quinn Hughes Trade Over the Line

Jack Hughes reflects on the Devils’ failed attempt to acquire brother Quinn, highlighting trade challenges and NHL roster realities.

The New Jersey Devils explored a high-profile move that could have reshaped their lineup. For a brief period, the possibility of pairing the Hughes brothers in the NHL seemed within reach.

That window has now closed, leaving the organization to focus on its current roster while reflecting on how quickly opportunities can change in the NHL.

Jack Hughes Reflects on Devils’ Missed Opportunity to Acquire Brother Quinn

The trade discussions surrounding Quinn Hughes captured attention across the league, particularly given the intrigue of a potential reunion with his younger brother, Jack Hughes, in New Jersey.

Quinn, a 26-year-old defenseman in his eighth NHL season, was traded from the Vancouver Canucks to the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 12. Vancouver received forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, defenseman Zeev Buium, and a 2026 first-round pick in return. The move finalized what had been a complex negotiation, complicated by Vancouver’s performance in the recent two seasons and the league-wide interest in his services.

Jack spoke openly about the situation during a post-game media availability on Sunday, describing the rapid nature of the trade and the adjustment it represented.

“It happened fast. I think he’s happy in Minnesota now. They got a great team there, and they’re playing well, but it definitely happened fast,” Jack said.

Jack’s comments conveyed both his support for his brother and the professional realities that often override personal connections in the league.

Quinn has quickly settled into his new role with Minnesota, making his Wild debut just two days after the trade on Dec. 14. “This team is impressive,” Quinn said following his first game.

“As I get going here and feel more comfortable, it’s gonna be exciting. They’ve got an amazing core. Obviously, I’ve only been here for four hours, but I’m getting to know some of the guys, and how energetic and positive some of them are. And then Minnesota, being so close to Michigan, and just the State of Hockey and the passion here… that means a lot to me.”

Quinn’s early performance with the Wild has reinforced his importance as a top-pair defenseman, logging an average of nearly 28 minutes per game in four games. This season, he has contributed three goals and 23 assists for 26 points. His ability to control play and generate offense from the blue line has made him a core component of Minnesota’s defensive strategy, both at even strength and on the power play.

The Devils, meanwhile, continue to rely on Jack as a cornerstone of their lineup. The 24-year-old center has posted 21 points in 18 games this season, showing his skill and consistency across all situations. He remains a driving force for New Jersey’s offense, particularly in tight games.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman highlighted the trade saga in his recent 32 Thoughts column, noting the complexity behind Vancouver’s negotiations. He detailed how multiple teams, including the Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers, Detroit Red Wings, and Carolina Hurricanes, explored acquiring Quinn but could not meet Vancouver’s requirements.

Friedman explained that New Jersey’s pursuit fell short due to timing, asset needs, and Quinn’s own contract considerations, emphasizing the intricacies of high-profile NHL trades.

Though the Devils missed out on acquiring Quinn Hughes this season, their attention now turns to upcoming games, starting with the New York Islanders on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET.
